Schlosser aims at bringing into the light the awareness of the things going on in this fast food industry to the consumers through this book, and also includes some of his experiences with fast food restaurants. We shall discuss the goals of Schlosser in writing this book, along with its influence on the readers, bringing awareness about their fast food lifestyle.
The American fast food industry has widely developed in the past decades, with numerous outlets over hundreds of countries across the globe. Companies like McDonald’s, Burger King, and Wendy’s are gaining popularity over the global arena with its food chains expanding throughout the world. It is undeniable that the industry has contributed much to the short-term and long-term job opportunities with more than 4 million people employed in the fast food industry. Despite the high turnover that the industry is facing in the economic sphere, the life behind the fast food chains are still prone to low-waged, exploited workers and unfair working conditions. However, the realities of these work places are not satisfactory, because of the increased worker exploitations that are prevailing in those food chains. The industry solely focuses on mass production and capital accumulation, leaving apart the true needs of individual appreciation and working conditions advancement. Furthermore, the industry has played a major role in the rise of franchises, which became an economic trend, contributing to the worldwide expansion of the western culture, particularly the fast food companies.
