The third category is the Sambos/Minstrels, who are stupid, lazy, carefree (and therefore irresponsible), and meek/docile (Signifying Works 25). Finally, the fourth category is the Coons, who replaced the Sambos after the abolition of slavery and showed that black people are unable to handle the freedom they now had. They are presented as buffoons that can sometimes turn very violent, and their acts of violence can be very spontaneous, unpredictable, and unwarranted. For the purposes of this paper, I have settled on Uncle Toms.

I will now go into the gist and detailed discussion of this paper. In my neighborhood and community there is a lot of evidence of my fellow community members believing in and/or perpetuating the stereotype that is associated with Uncle Toms. In fact, I would say that a large percentage of those people are modern-day Uncle Toms, and this is because they act irrationally, and display a weakness that is not acceptable in any progressive community, regardless of the race. For instance, the board game known as Ghettopoly glorifies drugs, guns (and by extension violence), the culture of “pimping”, and a poor (mostly negative) attitude towards life.

I see young male members of my community playing this game and going on to develop attractions to the abovementioned elements. I know of young men who do not go to school but are good at playing Ghettopoly. The game teaches them to shun the normal and acceptable route to growth and development and dream about the shortcuts they believe would guarantee them a faster way to riches and the good life. Consequently, it is common to find young men doing and dealing in drugs in the hope that they will get to build the newest and biggest cartels to resemble and even rival those they are able to build in Ghettopoly.
