Canadians Deserve Better Speech “Canadians Deserve Better Speech Hello my dear New Democrats and great candi s. I feel proud and happy to be here addressing you all. The wind of change is sweeping across the nation, it has reached everywhere from Cote-Nord to Montreal, Gaspesie to Quebec City. The wind has swept the entire nation, starting from James Bay, Abitibi-Temiscamingue and Qutaouais. This wind of change will lead to vast changes in the nation; will breathe new life into Canadian politics. Canadians deserve better. We all know it. Unfortunately, we could never come out of the circles of scandals after scandals for far too long. The curse of divisive politics made it impossible to come out of this quagmire where progress comes only in the form of elaborate speeches. There is no one in Canada who does not want to bring about a change. Promises are not new for the nation. We were promised to bring our soldiers home; but were cheated. We were offered a green economy but that still exists in dreams. We cried against scandals but we are blessed with scandals after scandals. It is the same story every time; only the leaders change. So, we all feel it is high time to change. Canada knows me, Canada knows Nycole Turmel. You, the people of Hull-Aylmer have seen how I have stood all these years for what I believed to be true. Canada is ready for the great leap. Dear friends, I am ready to bring that change to this very place by being its voice in the cabinet. My offer is not to pursue the age-old negative politics that stagnates progress. Instead, I promise to stay away from political dramas and work for what you people hold dear; your priorities. There are a number of things we urgently want to do in the nation. Firstly, we need to see that our families and seniors are not neglected. It is rather painful for every Canadian to see that our seniors-who gave us prosperity and dreams- are ignored as a result of our political dramas. In addition, we all love to have our troops back from Afghanistan. Evidently, it is high time to have a considerable change in policy, and it is high time for we people to show determination to wipe out what has clogged our political system and administration. It is rather embarrassing to note that the people whom we selected all these years to uphold what we believed true were deceiving us by vehemently and rudimently ignoring what they promised us. It is even more embarrassing to note that we went on selecting them again and again for reasons unknown. Admittedly, it is an injustice I am doing to myself if I say ‘for reasons unknown’. Evidently, it is our lukewarm attitude towards even such serious matters which give them the courage to conveniently forget what people want till election nears. Friends, the whole world knows the need to invest in clean energy. Even the third world governments know the significance of the issue and are investing in the same. We, the high-thinking, free-thinking, futuristic, and patriotic lot still continue offering subsidies to the culprits-the big polluters. Do you think the reason lies in lack of knowledge? I know the answer is a big no because we all have been waiting for a change that throws this corrupt system away. We want our future generations to bask in UV-free sunlight, breathe CO-free air, and bathe in pesticide-free water. My friends, there are people who believe that I am too aggressive to be a leader. Dear friends, I cannot slow down until I see that these all things are done. This is my commitment to my people that I will continue to be as aggressive as possible in doing everything to see that these all things are done. I can lead the change we need and I will if you will. Friends, we found pride in our unity as a nation for years and now, we are known for the rising regionalism. We have become a clueless society where our age-old values disappeared in the name of regionalism. Presently, there exists a gap between the rural and the urban, the modern and the traditional, and the rich and the poor. It is; in fact, impossible for a true Canadian to be a mute witness to the situation, and I have all the rights to be a little aggressive in reinstating my nation to prosperity and unity. There are a large number of things to be done in this country on a war footing. We cannot turn a blind eye towards the ‘western alienation’. It is highly necessary to show them that the whole nation cares for them. Otherwise, the area will get further divided in the name of so many more political parties, which the nation can no more afford (Watson, 1965). Another important area that requires immediate response is the Canadian troops in Afghanistan. According to reports, the nation has already spent $18 billion on a war that helps no one; and the amount to be spent in the next twenty years is calculated at $490 billion; that is $16,000 per each Canadian (Canadian Peace Alliance, 2010). Folks, we require a system that is not manipulated by the political game of mudslinging. I promise you that our party will stay away from the dirty politics and focus on the needs of the time. We offer you change in all these areas; not in four long years but in just hundred day’s time. We understand the needs of the time. People need help. Canada need help to reinstate and retain its cherished values of tolerance, compassion, pride in our differences, our respect for democracy, and cooperation. Friends, what we need at this eleventh hour is not discussion; we need to shake the lethargy away and work for the better. We need to get prepared to remove the trend of fighting each other. We need to remove the political parties which continue adopting such policies which are strongly against the Canadian sentiments and which are against humanity. Folks, Canada is not afraid of changes. It does not shiver on the face of challenges. It knows how to struggle through difficult times and how to replace the worn in with a new one. It knows how to fix a broken one. Evidently, what we boasted about as truly Canadian has left us; it is high time to fix it. If someone thinks I am intentionally aiming Conservatives, please note that they are just a part of the so many things to be changed; as already said, my party is not against any political party and it is seriously against rivalry politics. However, we will leave no stone unturned in doing what is necessary for the nation; to fix what is broken. Dear folks, you deserve better; Canada deserve better. We all are fortunate enough to take birth in a nation that has given birth to a large number of heroes; a nation that has a vibrant history of triumph against odds. We have the right to get rid of what has clogged our system and what has resulted in the loss of sight. We should not lose focus of what we need to do for the future of the nation. As we see, presently we are dangerously stagnant. We are allowing what we must never allow to do. And such odds are the times we united in our history. Friends, throughout history, odds have only made us realize what is to be corrected. Thus, it is high time to bounce back with the Canadian might; to stop polluting the environment, to stop ignoring and destroying our seniors, to stop supporting the polluters, to stop letting our troops wander in the deserts of Afghanistan for reasons unknown, and to stop promoting factionalism for political benefits. Friends, the very basis of this change we urgently need starts from the election. We promise you to do these for the bright future of our nation. We assure immediate improvement in all these areas beyond the traditional political gimmicks. We understand the needs of the hour and we assure you to do what we preach. Let us all roll up our sleeves to make Canada a better place for the coming so many generations. References Canadian Peace Alliance. (2010).
