The use of mission statement is wide and is not limited to any type of institution or business concern. Thus, non-profit organizations, educational institutions, private businesses and governments all have their own mission statements that are unique in their own way. Nonetheless, there are certain aspects that make the mission statements of the commercial and non-profit organizations different from each other. An example of such would be the aspect of commercial purpose that is not visible in non-profit organizations.

An organization also has to visualize its future position in order to remain competitive in the market and global competition. In this context, a vision statement helps an organization to determine its future vision at the time of its establishment. Thus, it enables the founders of the business or nonprofit organization to develop its goals and strategic policies in accordance with the vision that it has and desires to pursue in the long run. The vision statement can be based on a period of 5 to 20 years, depending upon its mission statement.

The purpose of this paper is to identify the 5 criteria for developing an effective mission and vision statement. Also, the paper will discuss the rationale for the 5 criteria to qualify as an integral part of an effective mission and vision statement. At the end, the paper will compare the lists of criteria of mission and vision statement in order to analyze the similarities and the differences between the two. A mission statement can only be effective if it consists of all the basic elements for which it exists.

For instance, the purpose of a mission statement is to establish the grounds on which the organization is formed. These grounds determine the nature, industry, target market and future economic and social benefits that the organization is aimed to provide.
