A personal social worker focuses on addressing specific needs; as contrasted to professional helpers who provide needed intervention based on effective assessment of the client’s needs.
The NASW Code of Ethics stipulates the guiding core mission, purpose, values, ethical principles and standards that govern the conduct and role of a professional social work helper. As such, the code stipulates clearly and explicitly the kind of behavior expected from professional social workers in their responsibilities towards various stakeholders such as clients, colleagues, practice settings, as professionals, to the social work profession, and to the broader society (Social Work The code is therefore important to the role of a professional helper in terms of providing explicit manner of conduct and behavior that adheres to ethical and moral standards which complies to the social work’s mission of enhancing “human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty” (Social Work par. 1).
The NASW Code therefore is the embodiment of all crucial and essential elements that must be followed by professional helpers to ensure that their conduct and behavior are amply guided in times of need.
