I was imbued with self-esteem as I learned about the life and ideas of Dr. Martin Luther King.
Once I came across his story, I had a journey through the way how Dr. King invoked the people. Dr. King’s motto ‘not to give up’ inspired me to withstand the trials and tribulations I had been facing throughout my middle school (6-8) grades. I was afraid of reporting due to the fear of repercussions. However, despite the fear of ramifications, I often weighed my sufferings against those of Dr. King in his efforts to take up nonviolence in his movement. His greatest speech I Have a Dream, still echoes in my heart, “I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, and every rough place will be made plain” (Luther-King & King, C, 2007, 25).
The way how he fought for equality, a determined process that helped the Americans realize their intolerance is highly admirable. The knowledge of such a distinguished personality and his strong convictions helped me recover my wounded heart. King was philosophical and sympathetic when mingling with common people. However, he needed to break the repression of ideas and come out with initiation to adopt new ventures in social life. This is one of the notable aspects of my character I believe, because I do not usually flare up when I confront unexpected challenges; instead, I try to calm myself and wait for the right time to act.
Dr. King’s willpower and confidence in the battle against discrimination stirred me up from the harsh experiences. Moreover, it made me think that race and gender are only shadows in life whereas determination, attitude, character, self-discipline, and willpower are the true substance of life. At this juncture, it is relevant to recall his words again; “and so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream; I have a dream that one day this nation will rise and live out the true meaning of its creed” (Luther-King & King, C, 2007, 25).
Admittedly, he taught me that we all are equal in every way irrespective of what color of skin we have. What is more, my all-time hero would be Dr. Martin Luther King, and I am always obliged for his efforts, because if he had not initiated the great movement against discrimination, we Williams, Jones, and I would not have been friends since our school days.
In short, Dr. King, the most significant historical figure in my mind has influenced my personality and goals. I have high regard for his vision that unimaginable accomplishments come along with persistence and commitment. While I am trying to absorb the magnificence of his personality, he draws all my attention to extol his success as a loveable human being. I am encouraged to voice my opinion and speak my mind only because of the influence of Dr. Martin Luther King’s actions and philosophy.
