Concentration in the Workplace - Admission/Application Essay Example

A number of processes take place in a sugar mill, which converts the raw form of sugar into the usable one. Sugar cane chopping is one those key processes in a sugar mill in which sugar canes are chopped using large moving gears. My friend and I used to operate the machine in a way that for one hour, my friend used to operate it and for the next hour, it used to be my turn to operate that machine.

One day, when it was my friend’s turn to operate the moving gears, I saw that one of his legs was right between the gears and he was not aware of that. The thing, which distracted his attention away from the situation, was that he was busy on a call on his cell phone. He was so much involved in the call that he did not know whether he was in the right position to start the machine or not. He was just about to press the start switch when I noticed his leg. I shouted and climbed at him within no time and dragged him away from his place.

Had I waited a couple of seconds thinking about what to do, the moving gears would have crushed my friend’s body. I felt very relieved and happy to save my friend’s life. This incident and my response to the situation really define my overall personality and my approach towards dealing with different situations. For example, I not only take care of my own safety at the workplace but also take every step to ensure the safety of my colleagues. I am the kind of person who feels good to help others more than doing something that benefits only me.

In the incident described above, my presence in the machine control room for the first few minutes of my friend’s turn shows my concern for ensuring workplace safety for everyone. It was not my legal obligation to be there when it was my friend’s turn to operate the moving gears. I was just there for the first few minutes to ensure whether everything was in the right position for my friend or not. Summing it up, that was the incident, which not only made me feel proud but also made me know the importance of concentrating only on work while at work.
