I have taken up jobs whenever I can to help pay my tuition. My family is very proud of the fact that I am the only one who has come this far, and that too on my own, but they are helpless as they do not have enough money and thus cannot help me in achieving my goal. As stated before, I am already under debt, debt that I am trying to pay off and find difficult to, to borrow more would burden me to the extreme.
I am a very avid learner and take great pleasure in my educational activities. This fact alone makes me the ideal candidate for this scholarship. ...Scholarship Essay I think of myself as 29 year old going on 40 due to the experiences that I have in my life. I grew up in a family that had tight finances and could barely afford to help me pay for my first few semesters of college. Times were so hard for us as a family that I had to drop out of college in order to work full-time and help the family. That was when my life started to go downhill. Just like other people who thought they were living dead-end lives, I eventually married. The result of the union was a divorce and a five year old daughter whom I now have custody of and have to support. To make matters worse, soon after my divorce, I had to move back in with my parents only to have to face a...

...Scholarship Essay As I am an immigrant to this country, I have had to adapt to a culture that is not my own. Coming from Colombia and being in my late forties, I had very little going for me. I could not speak English and at times felt overwhelmed with what I was experiencing. For the first two years of living here in America, I struggled to fit into society. However, I was determined to forge a better life for me and my children. No challenge was too great that I couldn’t overcome it if I tried hard enough. At first, the only job that I could get was as a hotel cleaning lady. In 2008, I took the first step to feeling like I belonged here—I began taking English classes at the HCC. From these humble...
