What Is the Purpose behind Writing a Reflective Commentary All of us have certain goals and ambitions in our life. Every human being is born with a purpose. Our purpose keeps changing with our life cycle. For a new born baby, the purpose would be to attract the attention of his or her parents and enjoy a protected life. For a teenager, the purpose would be different. The purpose of life of a teenager would be a life without much responsibility and indulge oneself in a life of merriment. However, as one grows up, there are important things that take preference over the other less important things. When we grow up, we aspire for a bright and prosperous career. Which is why we attend colleges and vocational education? A career is a journey not a destination. It is made up of a series of job profiles that a person has to fulfil before he attains his goal. Therefore, it is very important for a person to have a clear idea about what he wants to accomplish. Every job includes certain tasks, duties and responsibilities. In order to execute a job one needs to have certain skill sets. Through a reflective commentary one can analyse the skill sets that a person has to inculcate in order to reach his career goal. This can be done through a proper analysis of one’s skills and abilities. First and foremost, a person should define clearly what his career goal is. No analysis is complete without accurate determination of one’s career goal. Then one should know exactly the skill sets that are needed to achieve that goal. After that a person should do an introspection of his skills and abilities. If he has the required skills matching his career goal, he should look for avenues for its development. If he does not have the skills he should look for developing them through self development, training and counselling. There is certain framework for writing and framing a reflective commentary. These principles are enumerated below. The most difficult challenges that a person has faced in order to accomplish something. What have been the responses of the contemporaries in respect to the goals? What ways a person can develop himself? It is important to bear in mind one important thing in writing a reflective commentary. The reflective commentary should be written like an essay. This means the guidelines applicable for writing an essay applies equally to writing a reflective commentary. An essay is written in a very structured form. All the ideas should be coherent and logically set. There should be a proper introduction to the topic, the subject matter and a well laid out conclusion. (George Mason University, n.d.). Now, the main topic of discussion will be addressed. It is important to clarify that I am interested in working in a position of power in a company. I am fond of travelling and I am interested in exposing myself to different culture. I want to work in the position of business manager. Let me outline my important skills. Planning and Organising Team Working Persuade and Negotiate The skills that I need to develop are- Delegation Confidence booster Reading and interpreting graphs and tables The career goal that I have chosen for myself is extremely challenging. Working as a Business Manager in a company (Accenture) will be extremely demanding. The areas I need to work at are delegation, confidence boosting and developing my quantitative ability. I am putting in serious effort to iron them out. For delegation problem, I am attending training classes and the problem will be sorted in six months time. I have the same plan to boost confidence. To improve my quantitative ability, I plan to put more hours of practice and things are expected to be addressed in six months time. Reference George Mason University, No Date.
