Vignette Response for Post Graduate Admission The scenario described is a very tricky situation. Leader X confided that he began viewing pornography; moreover he believes that this is beginning to overwhelm his personal and professional life. The situation is complicated insofar as a second leader (Leader Y) is demanding a status update and insisting on obtaining information stating that this is a matter of the Leadership Team and God under the pretense that the church will suffer without this knowledge.

The format that this paper will utilize is to first identify how I would council Leader X, with specific reference to the style of therapy, the approaches I would use and the ethical issues involved. Secondly this paper will address how I would handle the request of Leader Y, with specific references to the reasons behind my decision and ethical issues involved. With any addiction it is promising to know that the individual suffering from the affliction has first identified that he has a problem.

According to the protocols laid out by Alcoholics Anonymous (2010) it is the case that Leader X has already admitted that he is powerless over his addiction, he already admits that there is a power greater than himself and made a decision to turn his will over to the care of God. From this perspective he is already well on his way to recovery. In regards to how I would help council his addiction I would use the program outline as utilized by Helpguide (2010) which gave three strong recommendations to improving an unhealthy behavior.

Firstly I would in total confidentiality discuss with Leader X any potential underlying problems that support his pornography addiction. Some examples of this would be depression, stress, problems at home, any co-addictions such as alcohol abuse. Then, it is upon this foundation that I would help council Leader X on his coping skills, insofar as I would suggest that viewing pornography is going to make him feel worse rather than better and perhaps there are more healthy ways to blow off some steam.

Lastly I would encourage Leader X to strengthen his support network, encourage him to try new activities with existing friends, build new bonds, set aside special activity times. In terms of any Ethical implications, that depends on the severity of his problem. Obviously if his pornography addiction is so severe my expertise may be unable to assist him, in this circumstance I would recommend he discuss this matter with somebody more sited to help him with his specific needs. A second ethical issue would be that viewing pornography can be abusive (Ethical Consumer, 2010) and upon this foundation if Leader X did not cease viewing pornography he may indirectly or directly be contributing to the exploitation of women.

In terms of handling the request of Leader Y, the solution from my perspective is that my counseling closely resembles a confession and in most Christian religions a confession is personal connection between God and the perpetrator. According to the Constitution of the Presbyterian Church of the USA (2010) confession is the reality of sin in personal. It is upon this foundation that I would advise Leader Y that the dealings between my counseling with Leader X are private and in order to have the healing properties of any counseling session one must respect the privacy of the relationship.

It is upon this foundation that the reason for my not revealing this information is that the information is only pertinent to Leader X, myself and god. In terms of ethical implications one could postulate that perhaps Leader X’s addiction is not only detrimental to himself but to others. According to the Guide to Psychology (2010) there is no privilege to confidentiality if the therapist believes the patient is in such a mental or emotional state as to be dangerous to himself or others. In this circumstance I would have to reveal the danger that Leader X to proper authorities.
