Download file to see previous pages and participative approach of the management and labor force greatly enhances the evolving processes of changes within the system to significantly improve the performance. The chapter primarily contradicts the assumption that the lean production practices have improved labor conditions within the production line.
The authors have surveyed three automobile companies to study the impact of lean production techniques on the various issues of workforce vis-à-vis impact of shifts in the labor processes; relevance of cooperative industrial relation system; ground reality of workers’ autonomy; impact of management surveillance on stress levels of workers; condition of productive labor, role of union etc. The survey of employment conditions under lean production in the three automobile companies of UK and Europe; BMW-Cowley, GM-Vauxhall and Fiat-Melfi have exposed the myths. It shows the stark reality of administrative and managerial dominance over the workers’ welfare, especially in the production line on the shop floor.
BMW-Cowley was the result of acquisition of Rovers Group by German Company Cowley in 1994. The role of union was minimal and while agreeing to flexible hours, clause on no layoffs and no enforced redundancies were included. The co-determination model was incorporated within the system of BMW-Cowley.
GM-Vauxhall marriage was also a result of compulsion where the management was able to negotiate with labor union in its favor. The tough economic conditions significantly gave leverage to the administration that was able to introduce changes without much conflict. But by 1995, the workforce had voices its discontent of the lean production processes.
Fiat-Melfi was Italian where union played quite prominent role. The union members also had representation in the company’s joint consultative committees.
