Alcohol consumption has both short-term and long-term effects. The habitual drinkers mostly experience the short-term impacts of alcohol consumption. A dependent drinker is likely to experience more severe and long-term effects of alcohol. They have a higher tolerance to alcohol and often drink much more without suffering any noticeable short-term effects. Some of the short-term effects of alcohol includes; faster heartbeat, talkative feeling at the initial stages. Further, the brain and nervous system begins to be affected.

This results in poor judgment and decision-making, causing the consumer to be reckless and uninhibited (Dasgupta 85). Soon the alcohol alters the cells in the user nervous system, making him/her feel light-headed thus, affecting his/her reaction time and co-ordination. At this point, the consumer response times will be slower, and his/her speech will start to slur, and his/her vision will begin to lose focus. More alcohol consumption will lead to severe co-ordination problem, placing the consumer at serious risk of causing unintended injury and accident.

Alcohol Poisoning is also another short-term effect of alcohol. High amount of alcohol in the body could result in poisoning. The consumers’ body tries to pass quickly out the alcohol into the urine. This will make the user feeling very dehydrated.This will lead to headache, digestion upset leading to symptoms of nausea and vomiting. The abuse of alcohol has serious long-term negative effects on the drinker, people close to the drinker and the entire society. For instance, alcohol consumption has adverse effects on the drinker’s physical health.
