Should flag burning be banned? I do not think it should be banned. When things become banned and censored freedom is lost. I am not saying that I would ever burn or disrespect a flag. My pride in being an American is too deeply ingrained. However, I would never burn a flag of another culture or county. As an American, I am too confident in my country to put another country down. The flag does represent values that stand for America, but the flag is not what makes American values. It is a symbol.

Former General Patrick Brady does not agree with this stance. He stated: A constitutional amendment banning flag burning and other types of flag desecration should be passed. Contrary to Supreme Court rulings and the opinion of people who oppose such an amendment, flag burning is not a form of speech. The flag desecration amendment has widespread public support, would restore the Constitution to its original meaning, and would help instill patriotism. (Brady 70)I do not agree with the former General.

His opinion is valid, but so are mine. As a military man, Brady served under the American flag. That might make the flag more important to him. Living in America, he can fly the flag freely as I do. My final position is taking rights away from Americans that are Constitutionally based will only lead to a totalitarian or communist country. We live in the land of the free, let’s keep it that way.
