Although passbook savings is one of the most widely used since it stipulates few restrictions and withdrawals are usually not limited; consequently they are typically low yielding alternatives to other types of accounts. Interest can be compounded daily, weekly or monthly so it pays to calculate actual yield based on terms and all transactions are recorded. Money market accounts provide a more attractive alternative to passbook accounts, since they are usually higher yielding, provide the ability to write checks, and are subject to certain restrictions. Some disadvantages are that they are typically subject to fairly high minimum balance requirements in order to avoid fees and usually restricted to six withdrawal transactions, three must be done by check. Certificate of deposit provides the most attractive alternative as an investment instrument. Certificates of Deposit provide the highest interest return and are virtually risk free due to the fact that they are insured by the FDIC. The deposits are usually of a fixed term, with maturity ranging often three months, six months or from 1-5 years. Interest is usually fixed, with longer term CD’s usually offering a higher yield. The main disadvantage lies in the fact that early withdrawal is heavily penalized, thus the investor must be aware of this fact because the principal is held until ...Download file to see next pagesRead More

...and therefore, it is important to realize as what is it that is integrated or summed up. It is essentially the product of the dependent variable (y) and infinitesimally small increment in the independent variable or ?x which is continuously summed up. If we know from which point to which point this summation is to be done, then we get a definite answer and this integral is known as definite integral. Mathematically it is expressed by indicating the limits or boundaries of integration as shown below. This is a definite integral with integration being carried out between ‘a’ and ‘b’ (a < b) for y, which is a function of x. This definite integral gives many useful parameters like area under curve, area of a curved surface,...

...Admission Essay Prompt Applied mathematics is my intended major, because I find it a channel of developing and transmitting information, in ways that other subjects and science do not. Applied mathematics has been more like an accompaniment throughout the professional and the career journeys that I have taken – ever since I was a little girl. My love for math intensified after I took a year of math study at Drexel; it opened the way to the realization that math is more than a subject to me, but more of my world. For all these years, math is more like a language and not a science subject like many people regard it; I find math a channel through which I comprehend the world around me (Stolz 45-47). My...

...Mathematics Mathematics in elementary school, especially for the and pupils who don't speak English as their native language, appears to bethe subject of contradiction - on the one hand, mathematics as it is does not represent any difficulties, on the other hand, language problems make this subject too difficult for understanding. If students in mathematics classes are to learn mathematics with understanding--a goal that is accepted by almost everyone in the current debate over the role of computational skills in mathematics classrooms--then it is important to examine examples of teaching for understanding and to analyze the roles of the...

...Instructions: Independent study. Choose a topic within algebra for independent study. Your topic should be mathematics that you have not studied before or that goes beyond what you have studied. For example, you may use this topic on"Nuclear salvation or nuclear folly" by R.E Lapp. Do not think about developing a lesson plan, or to teach your topic to children. A little story of mathematics is welcome, but that should not be the main theme of your paper. The objective is to describe some mathematics that you have learned. Include a summary of why you selected your topic, and what you learned about it from each resource that you used. Also include some questions provoked by what you...

...of these variations have led to a Mathematics Subject Classification 11P05 entitled “Waring’s Problem and variants.” The Goldbach Conjecture In 1742, Goldbach suggested that every integer greater than 2 could be written as the sum of 3 primes. However, Goldbach considered the number 1 to be prime, Euler reformulated Goldbach’s statement to propose that: all even integers greater than 2 can be written as the sum of 2 primes, and this is now known as the Goldbach Conjecture. This paper explores the progress that has been made towards the proof of this conjecture to date. The above statement is the strong/even/binary conjecture. The weak/odd/tertiary conjecture is an implication of the above, and is as follows: all odd...

...1. An instance in my daily life where I rely on the skills of rounding and estimating is when I do the grocery shopping. In order to get a fair estimate of what my bill is up to, I roughly calculate the value of each shopping item by rounding to the closest whole number. An occupation such as a shop teller would need to have sound multiplication and division skills because their job requires them to give and receive the right amount of change. 2. The concept of negative numbers is harder to grasp because there cannot be anything less than nothing, which is what zero is. An example of where it is important to understand integers in the financial world is with banking (Glydon). If someone spends more than they have available... An instance in...

...Consumer Math Consumer Math Consumer math is a field of mathematics which helps one manage his personal finances. It covers a wide range of consumer problems such as budgeting, loans, banking, investments, insurance, and taxes. One very useful concept of consumer math is the topic on annuities. “An annuity is a stream of equal cash flows that occur at equal intervals such as monthly or annually” (Chatham Central Schools, n.d.). Examples of annuities are savings accounts, individual retirement accounts (IRA) and insurance policies where one makes a regular contribution. After making regular payments, one gets an amount which includes...
