Personality assessments and learning style tests give me an idea of how my personality and learning style affects my abilities as a team member. This report will reflect on how my group project allowed me to learn and progress throughout the course. I will assess how my strengths and weaknesses affected the group and how I grew from my role in the team. Coming into this project, I am able to utilize my experience as a business owner since our group project involves a business enterprise. I owned a personal training company and was in charge of management of the business, gaining valuable real life experience. I expect to grow and be able to use the results of this report to improve my performance in the remainder of my degree course. Personality Analysis Summary The results of the personality analysis showed that I am primarily an Implementer and secondarily a Shaper. This means I am organized, rely on common sense and demonstrate self-discipline. I like to approach problems systematically and map out a solution with a series of steps. When working in a group, I tend to focus on the best interests of the group rather than my own. I am useful in groups because I can keep on track and persist until the task is completed, regardless of difficulty. Some flaws or weaknesses in my personality include a possible lack of flexibility and a resistance to unproven ideas. This is where my secondary personality trait becomes useful. As a shaper, I am outgoing and dynamic. I am highly motivated and have ample energy a desire for achievement. I often push others to work hard and find ways to overcome obstacles. I can handle confrontation and sometimes find it useful. However, my personality as an Shaper will help me deal with high pressure, stressful situations, and deadlines [Appendix A]. Learning Style Summary In my learning style analysis, I discovered that my learning style is evenly spread across the four learning styles and I have at least a moderate preference for all the learning styles. I had a slightly stronger preference for the reflector learning style. This means that I prefer to observe, consider all angles, and think. I like structured experiences, case studies, and reports because they contain thorough information and evidence. However, my ability to learn using all four styles makes me adaptable to any learning situation. This can be very useful and keep my education balanced as I continue through my degree program [Appendix B]. Comparison of Results My Shaper characteristics complement my ability to complete tasks as an Implementer. Sometimes I have to be careful, because my aggressiveness combined with my possible lack of flexibility as an Implementer could be detrimental to a group if not kept under control. This is where my self-discipline can be extremely useful. Although my Implementer personality allows me place the interests of the group ahead of my own, my Shaper personality will allow me to make difficult or unpopular decisions to promote the group’s interests. My organizational skills as an implementer and my ability to shape the group allow me to be excellent at prompting group members into action. With my possible lack of flexibility and tendency to offend others, I must be careful to slow down and consider the contributions and abilities of my team members. My learning style and personality traits are important because combined they strengthen my effectiveness as a team member. The ability to balance across the four learning styles also allow me to stay balanced as a team member. I can use various learning styles to learn from group members and gain ideas and perspectives that can help the group. Staying balanced will prevent a lack of flexibility and keep me from offending team members, as my personality analysis suggests I am prone to do. Group Examples to Support Questionnaire Results For our group project, I was appointed as team leader in the beginning. After careful consideration, I decided to step aside and let another team member take the position of team leader. The group contained eight members and we decided to plan a trip to Italy as our group project. When drawing up the plans for the project, the group decided this would costly and the group did not have enough time to raise the funds. Instead, the group opted to organize a boat party on the river Thames. My role in the group was to help organize the team members and inform the team of meetings and update the team on any changes in action plans or decisions. I also confirmed attendance with the members and called any members who could not attend and gave them the information. As an experienced business owner, I was in charge of marketing by distributing flyers. Our group agreed with the boat company that there would be no rent if the bar could generate a profit of 2500 pounds. The group estimated that the cost of the flyers and the DJ would be approximately 200-300 pounds. The group would make it’s own profit by selling tickets to the boat party. My role in the team demonstrates my personality as an Implementer and a Shaper. My organizational skills allowed me to help develop a plan of action and decide on group meeting times. I was also able to make sure all team members stayed informed so they could be involved. My abilities as a Shaper allowed me to push other team members to be active in the group project by attending all meetings and staying informed about the group plan of action. I was also able to handle the pressure of marketing to draw in enough party goers to meet the profit requirement for the boat company. My strong preference for the reflector learning style allowed me to help determine the costs of the party and think about what marketing strategies would generate the highest profit for the group. My experience as a business owner had taught me that there are problems that can arise in marketing and this type of structured experience allowed me to predict and prevent marketing problems. This was beneficial for the group since our time was limited. Group Examples to Support Lecture Materials Strengths and Weaknesses From this group project I learned that I have excellent organizational skills and an ability to push group member toward positive action. My potential to be inflexible and aggressive could have been overbearing, so it was probably better for the group that I stepped out of the team leader position. It seems that my abilities serve the team best in a second-in-command position. My ability to observe and reflect on my experience as a business owner allowed me to learn what I needed to know in order to successfully market the boat party. Report Summary Knowing my personality traits and learning style will be useful as I continue my education. In future group projects, I will be able to inform my team of my strengths as an organizer, action-generator, and my business experience. Because I am aware of my weaknesses which include a lack of flexibility and a tendency to offend other group members with my aggressive nature, I will suggest my best role would be a leadership position although not necessarily the top leadership position. My balanced learning style will allow me to succeed in future classes and projects regardless of professors, curriculum, and teaching strategies.
