Vocabulary Before I took G011, I was not really that confident about my ability in using the English language, particularly in my English vocabulary.Taking up G011 has helped me enrich my vocabulary by increasing my exposure to the English language. I was able to increase my knowledge in English words and expressions through the various readings assigned to us and through reading our textbooks. I became more confident in writing English words, phrases and sentence due to my expanded English vocabulary. I was also inspired to read more English-written books and papers as my understanding of this language becomes deeper. I am, however, still having difficulties in more difficult English words, those that are not usually used in the every day life or in the regular textbook. I still find myself searching for the meaning of these words. Also, I’m still having problems in writing English paragraphs because I tend to write the same words in the different sentences within the same paragraph. This is because I still need to further expand my knowledge of English words and their synonyms. However, I know that I can still add to my knowledge in the English vocabulary by exposing myself more to this language through reading English books, papers and articles and through interacting with other people who are native English speakers and writers.
Grammar
Before taking this class, the English grammar was the most difficult area for me. As I am not used to writing or speaking English sentences, my sentence structure in English was not really that good. The grammar pre-test that we took at the start of this class really showed that grammar is a big weakness for me. But after taking this class, I can say that my English grammar has significantly improved. The lessons on verb tenses and the subject – verb agreement could be simple lessons for those who are good in writing in English but for me, these two lessons were challenging ones because they are at the core of what I needed to correct in my grammar. Although these lessons were hard for me, they have helped me improve my grammar in this aspect. Reading the two textbooks, the reading strategies and the improving study skills have also exposed me to proper English grammar. Of course, as I am still developing my English skills, I still find it hard to write English sentences properly. Sometimes, it is easier to go back to my old English grammar rather than to have to think things through to ensure that the subject and the verb agree all the time, that I am using the proper verb tense and that everything else actually makes sense. Hopefully, after this class, I will continue to improve my English grammar by doing what I plan to do to improve my vocabulary.
Reading
Prior to taking up G011, there were a lot of things I didn’t know about English, the language, etc. I didn’t even know that there are various reading strategies that we can use. What caught my attention in this part of our course was that, in the first few paragraphs of Chapter 9 in the introduction to reading strategies, it was written that successful academic readers are active readers, they use strategies when they read and that they are not mere passive readers. With this, I was able to see that, if I want to become a good reader, I should use what I have learned in this course to get as much as I can from all the things that I read. This has taught me what steps I need to take to be able to understand fully what I am reading. I have become a better reader by following the SQ3R. I have also become a more active reader and have learned to take down notes on what I read in order to retain more of what I’ve read. These changes in my reading habits have also spilled to my other courses as I use them whenever I need to read a book or study for my exams. Hopefully, I will develop my reading habits more so that it becomes more natural for me to become an active reader in the future.
Future Studies
There are two things that are the most valuable skills for me. First, is the skill of proper subject and verb agreement. This is a simple lesson, but it is the most useful for me as this is my basic weakness when it comes to English grammar. This is also the most useful of all the skills I have obtained from this course as I can use this skill in my future courses when I need to write English essays. In addition, I will also be able to use this skill when I go to work because I may need to write English papers, reports and even electronic communications and proper English grammar during this time is a must. The second lesson is the reading strategies that I have learned in this course, particularly that of becoming an active reader. Although my skill on this strategy is not yet that well-developed, I have at least learned the basics that I can use when I read my textbooks or various papers in my future courses. In the future, I need to practice more what I have learned, even when I’m already on my own. I need to independently read more English books, articles, papers, etc. to expand my vocabulary. I need to write more in English (and not be hesitant about it) to develop my English grammar. I need to make sure that I still continuously apply the reading strategies I have learned even after I have left this class. Read More
