In this report I am going to research on this issue. Multimedia is media and content that uses a mixture of diverse content forms. As technology evolves the human want to have more easy way to living and working. In the pervious few years the entertainment industry has also evolved and the new technologies like CD, DVD and online multimedia availability are few examples of this technology. The aim of this report is to determine and evaluate two multimedia technologies those are CD and online multimedia. Here I will show how the traditional CD technology was better as compared to new online multimedia technology. Introduction The term media is employed in difference to media which simply make use of conventional types of hand-produced or printed material. Multimedia comprises a mixture of animation, video, audio, interactivity, still images and text content types (Kenneth, 1998). Multimedia is an elderly notion that has been specified fresh meaning by the computer industry in the course of their hard work to make multimedia compatible computing platforms. If we define Multimedia in the scholarly sense then it will be called as the “interactive dramatization of information”. Multimedia technology employs the computer to unite animation, text, audio, and graphics and complete motion video in the user control. However mixture of these functions have been obtainable for several years, it has been hard to merge them so that the non-technical consumer is able to control them and thus produce documents or functions that add in all these features. Usually, putting collectively such arrangement necessitates the abilities of a computer programmer or an information technology professional. In the pervious few years there has been infrequent employ made of multimedia resources together in academia and in business, however this has been mainly driven by expert persons working ad hoc and in separation. Multimedia is generally played and recorded, accessed or displayed by information processing multimedia devices, like that a computerized or an electronic device, however it can be a fraction of a live multimedia performance (Parker et al, 1996). This research is aimed to reveal the main advantages of traditional CD technology as compared to present online multimedia technology. I have divided this report into subsections in this way we would have a better and clear overview of the whole scenario. In the first section I will discuss about the evolution of the new multimedia technology from the traditional multimedia technology. Then I will present few advantages of the traditional multimedia CD technology. The next section will present an overview of the new traditional online technology Evolution of the multimedia technology This section presents the evolution of the multimedia technology from its origin to present online multimedia technology. In the year 1965 the expression Multimedia was employed to explain the “Exploding Plastic Inevitable”, a performance that combined live cinema, experimental lighting, rock music, and performance art. In the prevailing 40 years the word has taken on diverse senses. Term Multimedia in the late 70s was utilized to explain appearances consisting of multi-projector presentation slide demonstration timed to an audio track. In the 90s it obtained on its present sense. In widespread practice the term multimedia presents to an electronic means distributed blend of media comprising audio, video, still images, text in similar a method that be able to be admission interactively. A great deal of the multimedia content on the internet nowadays falls inside this description as understood by millions. A number of computers which were promoted in the 1990s were expressed as "multimedia" computers for the reason that they integrated a CD-ROM drive that permissible for the relief of a number of hundred megabytes of audio, picture and video data. This technology has emerged now to the online multimedia huge network that now has millions of data files regarding this medium. This network is growing day by day due to people concentration but this also have lots of drawbacks in this technology. Multimedia and Internet With a bandwidth hardly capable to hold up basic text E-mail, the Internet can appear the ending media probable to carry multimedia marketing, however it is previously proving to be a main player. While it shorts the bandwidth to share out a whole multimedia presentation, the Internet is able to simply deal out part of a presentation. Multimedia is by meaning a number of media coming jointly in a particular presentation (Geoffrey, 2004). By means of a network connection (comparable to the web or else a local BBS) to take the imperfect data traffic of a clients orders, and a CD-ROM to amass the data that obtains all the space, similar to elevated resolution complete color graphics, and video, the consequential multimedia not merely out achieves the majority present media, however offers innovative capabilities also (Simoneuni, 2008). The explanation for this is Network/CD supported multimedia promotion unites a number of diverse media in a method that conserve the most excellent qualities of each one, exclusive of the difficulties. Network E-mail is inexpensive and prompts, however it is short of visual effects. Print and video have images impacts however are exclusive to create and deal out, and are able to be out dated inside hours. The meticulous alchemy of CD multimedia creates promotion that is swift, inexpensive, has an elevated visual impact, and will for all time have the newest costs, specs, and accessibility (Chris, 2006). CD multimedia is a mainly beneficial combination for the reason that it is supported by two of the majority rate effectual media technologies acknowledged. By means of CD-ROMs price less than a dollar to create in manufacture runs of a small as 2,000 items, CDs at the present have an important cost benefit over the merge of catalogs and film tapes desirable to take the similar content. Network service suppliers, differs from the neighboring phone corporations to CompuServe, and are in a cost war challenging for everybody with a modem, so communication contact prices will carry on to fall, for all time (Jayashree, 2007). The CD can comprise video presentations that a list can not, offering an elevated level of control. As well, the willingly obtainable straight connection to the distributor forever offers the client with the newest costs, products, and accessibility. Advertisers don't require waiting for the elevated bandwidth of the Information Highway to start on multimedia promotion to their clients. The highest increasing section of computer trades is the house marketplace, and the majority of the deals are peak end multimedia systems, specifically the type of configuration wanted to play network/CD multimedia promotion. All the essential technology is previously in position; it immediately required to be used (Glen, 2006). Multimedia implementation Fields Nowadays multimedia technology is obtainable everywhere and have used in a number of fields of life. The purpose of this section is to investigate the multimedia technology implementation is different fields of life. This part if report is developed to find out the areas of multimedia technology those are related to the new or traditional fields and then analyzing if these are really obtained advantage of multimedia technology implementation. Filed Description Commercial This field has the majority implementation of this technology was carried out make products and services commercials. A large amount of the electronic old and new multimedia used by business artists is multimedia. In this area the multimedia has established its roots in the commercial advertising and in interoffice communications. Commercial multimedia producers can be employed to design for nonprofit services and governmental services applications as well. Education In Education, multimedia is employed to offer computer based teaching, educational courses and online books similar to some online encyclopedia. Edutainment is a casual expression employed to explain joining entertainment with education, particularly multimedia activity. In creative studies the further implementation of multimedia technology is on fine arts, entertainment, commercial art, to journalism, software services etc. Engineering Software engineers may possibly utilize multimedia in software Computer Simulations for something from amusement to guidance like that military or manufacturing training. Multimedia for software programs interfaces are frequently prepared as support among innovative experts and software engineers. This is biggest implementation area of the multimedia technology that includes effects in movies and animations, multimedia games, interactive multimedia and art gallery etc. Advantages of the Traditional Technology The traditional multimedia technology is thought to be more efficient than the new online multimedia technology. There are several reasons behind this argument. In this section I will present few points in this scenario. The main and biggest advantage of the traditional technology is its less cost as compared to new online multimedia technology. The average cost spent on the download of a data from the website is more that purchasing a CD. Next it also takes more time for downloading the amount of data equivalent to the CD data. Then next factor is the huge online multimedia formats, downloading a particular format require the particular player so overall this is a really difficult to use such technology. Online search for the particular data takes less time but the terms and conditions established by the site are the points where the user feels distraction. Disadvantages of new online multimedia technology This section will present few points that are against the online multimedia technology. Here I will try to present the more common points those will show how this technology did not compete the traditional CD technology. The common audio format is MP3 that is easily available and can be played on computer, mobile or IPOD without the need for some special software, but online multimedia website contains unique file system. There are lots of files systems that use online and require some special software for playing them like rm, 3gps, wav or flv file formats. Next there are incomplete catalogs, for the reason that of copyright anxieties. Another facility that this technology lacks is the non availability of the "hard copy" of acquired music, similar as a CD, for archiving. The majority multimedia stores utilize “Digital Rights Management”, which restricts copies of music on a number of devices. The limitations differ among different services, and from time to time yet among different songs from the similar service. Now I will discuss few disadvantages regarding the MP3 technology available online for the multimedia entertainment. The online available MP3 does not have the similar quality as CD has. A number of layouts will not work with a few MP3 players. The entire business is mono-polyzed Deciding quantity over superiority is similar to deciding ten black-and-white TV shows above three 3 TV shows that are in color. When MP3 receives acceptance, being inferior feature sound than CDs, Online multimedia drawback analysis Here I will outline few online obtainable multimedia technologies. Now in this part I will explain each area of problems those are associated for the reason that of internet. Surfing the online websites is raising habit for the reason of innovative and distinctive technology, which offers amusement, information, and un-limited access to huge data. For those that have need of time to take a seat and turn over from beginning to end a newspaper, or scrutinize half an hour of latest, the Internet provides them a place to discover news and present events. In the below table I will present the analysis of the two technologies (new online multimedia and traditional multimedia technology). This table is produced to analyze and discover main weaknesses in this technology to support my research argument. Here I am going to discuss and streamline the main field or the types of the online available multimedia. In this discussion I will try to present the main problems that are associated with this technology. NO. Online available multimedia Problems as compared to traditional multimedia technology 1 Videos Low bandwidth problem Multiple video formats Online pornography Time consuming to download Low picture quality Virus attack danger Watching online video is irritating 2 Audio Virus attack danger Non accessibility of single audio format. Online restrictions regarding the copy and giving out of audio files In case of low bandwidth of internet, the downloading speed is really slow No multimedia back up facility Incomplete audio catalogs for the users who are going to search for the music 3 Radio more expensive to listen radio Sophisticated infrastructure need as compared to small radio High bandwidth requirements 4 Advertisement/ online ad low bandwidth Problem with original task performance Low Image quality Audience characteristics Limited production quality Measurement problems Potential for deception Clutter Poor reach and lack of Intrusiveness Websnarl 5 Podcasting Accessibility issues online pornography time consuming costly difficult to download big size of the multimedia Creators of the multimedia podcasts need to make sure that file format is suitable for all mp3 players not immediately on iPods. Conclusion In this report I have analyzed the argument that is “online multimedia cannot compete against the traditional CD multimedia systems”. Here I have discussed the different points and analyzed the different aspects of these technologies. In this analysis I have presented the advantages of traditional technology and disadvantages or problems of new-fangled online multimedia technology. I have discovered that traditional technology is really good in terms of cost, time and availability. In the online multimedia technology we need better technology and speed. So as I have analyzed that traditional technology is better than this new technology. References 1. Ayre, Jim. 1996. ‘The Multimedia Yearbook’, 5th ed. TFPL Multimedia, London. 2.
