Book review/comparision between Out of the silent Planet and Frankenstein - Essay Example

In Frankenstein, Victor becomes fearful of his monster after it does not turn out the way he wishes. This leads to the monster feeling rejected and, therefore, hopeless. Victor does not understand the monster and, therefore, he is fearful of it. Similarly, Professor Weston and his associate Devine are fearful of the inhabitants of Malacandra because they are much different from human beings. These men react in much the same manner as Victor, as they kill three hrossa while on the planet. These novels show that human beings are fearful of things that are different and, often times, will react in a violent manner when faced with the unknown and they also show what can happen when scientists do not take responsibility for the consequences of their work.

When the self does not understand the "other", it will often act out violently because the self sees the "other" as a threat to its livelihood. At the beginning of Frankenstein, Victor is in search of exceeding the limits of creation that human beings possess by creating his own being. This is also an attempt to discover what the secret of human life is, as Victor is taking his own turn at creating another being. This, however, does not work out the way Victor had hoped it would, which is shown by the way than his monster turns out.

Victor’s creation eventually destroys everyone that is close to him and ultimately leads to his own death. This means that Victor was not prepared to take responsibility for his own actions when he created this being. As soon as Victor saw that his creation had not turned out as he wished, he abandoned it, making it the world’s problem. This shows that while he was prepared to create another being, he was in no way ready to face the consequences of his actions. This causes Victor to begin to hate his creation.
