Various issues were raised in the media and press reporting, and the credibility of the news, reports and published opinions has been questioned. The focus of the concerns is geared towards news reports and features, as well as commentaries presented objectively in view of British Muslims and the Islam faith in general.

The role of media in any society is vital for it is one of the most effective modes of information exchange. In the last few years, the level of reach, frequency, mode of presentation and approach employed by the media has progressed in leaps and bounds. The UK has the second-largest publishing industry in Europe with a turnover of at least £18.4 billion, comprising more than 8000 plus companies employing around 164,000 people.** Newspapers enjoy some advantages in the market as compared to other publications.

Most of the newspapers are strong brands, have high reach and authoritative content (qualities). Regional and local newspapers enjoy the trust of the readers and the role of newspapers within the economy and society is well established and understood. Since the major source of funding for a newspaper is advertising, especially from corporate groups, there is a significant influence exerted upon newspaper content by these advertisers. The indirect control of these two groups is a significant factor that must be taken into account in examining the influence of the media on the community.

Advertisers use newspapers that enjoy wide circulation to reach the readers, who in turn buy newspapers to obtain information. Newspapers rely upon advertisers for revenues and upon the reading public to boost their circulation and receive more advertisements. For most people, a newspaper is a staple source of information about current events, presented from the standpoint of facts.

A true journalist is faced with the challenge of reporting events and incidents in an unbiased manner. Stone (1989) states that the “writer’s responsibility…consists in writing well and truly, to use a Hemingwayesque Locution”.
