Jungian Results in Relation to MBA Pursuit Introduction I am planning to develop a career in business and finance. I am really inspired watching the financial news channels. So, I decided to consider taking an MBA, once I graduate next year. I consulted this matter to my parents, my friends, and professors. They told me to go to the Guidance Office, and ask to be administered a Career and Personality Psychometric Test. The Guidance Counselor administered one of the most popular instruments, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, based on Jung's work on personality types. The results indicated that I am an INTJ or Introverted, Intuitive, Thinking, and Judging person. This paper will endeavour to identify my goals and relate the results of the psychometric exam to them. I will try to justify that my goals, personality, and path are compatible with each other. Goals I mentioned earlier that I want to specialize in business and finance. Hence, I think and feel that an MBA is the most logical choice. In general, I want to be rich while deepening my understanding of how money works. By the age of forty, I really desire to accumulate a net asset of at least $100,000,000 and a weekly cash flow of at least $1,000,000. I believe that knowledge of business systems and becoming a businessman will help me achieve this path to glory. Also, by having that amount of cash, I can invest large amount of money in blue-chip stocks, which I really want to do. Essentially, investing for me is like playing a computer game. An MBA, I think, will help me know the rules and determine for myself the optimal decisions to achieve such goals. Once I become successful, I hope of fulfilling my fantasy of being interviewed in CNBC and other financial networks. There are many things I wish to say that I want to do, but I think the above would suffice. INTJ Now, let's determine the bigger picture by knowing what INTJ really means. According to Keirsey's Temperament Sorter on INTJ (in Halverson, n.d.): - Manipulates the world of theory as if on a gigantic chess board, always seeking strategies and tactics that have high payoff. - Eye for the consequence. - Can be ruthless. - Seldom counting personal cost. - Dealing with reality. - Using deductive logic, they use their intuition to grasp coherence. - Useful. - Creativity. - Very single minded at times - this can be a weakness or a strength. - They can ignore the points of view and wishes of others. - Coherence is the master. - Cost effective. - Relationships which have psychological distance. - Often seem demanding and difficult to satisfy. - Independent. - Hypersensitive to signals of rejection. - Others receive a sense of haste. - Vulnerable in the emotional area and may make serious mistakes here. - When asked to put something together for the first time - a prototype - he is all the more happy, since he is doing that which is most worthwhile. - Abhors unsnarling messes. - Things have to make sense. - Avoids redundancy. - May have difficulty communicating the details of goals. - Prefers not to say anything twice and assumes understanding. - Serious. - NTs tend to be relatively uninterested in acquiring wealth. - NTs usually take family responsibilities seriously. - NTs tend not to "own" the behaviors or bodies of their mates. - NTs' own errors are those which are inexcusable and unforgivable. I concede that there are aspects of an INTJ that do not fit me, but I affirm that many do. For example, I am independent and ruthless. In dealing with people, I really push to have my way and final say on things. So, an INTJ is the closest description available for me. I also believe that an INTJ is well suited for a career in Business and Investments. An INTJ like me is serious. Business is serious. It has no room for people who will slack on things. An MBA, although by no means really represents all aspects of business in the classroom, is serious stuff. You cannot pass it without the necessary seriousness to study and finish all requirements, such as difficult and mind-blowing case studies. A person pursuing an MBA and in real business must have an "eye for the consequence." This means that long-term and short term goals and priorities are set. Some people for are more open-mind like the Perceiving types cannot survive in business, where strict schedules and structures are in place. I had my shares of ups and downs in goal setting and prioritizing, but generally this approach works for me. And since business is my interest and I have qualities necessary to thrive in it, I don't see any other reason as to why my personality is not fit for it. Career Prospects Look at the following list of possible career paths for an INTJ (Careers, 2006): Scientists Engineers Professors and Teachers Medical Doctors / Dentists Corporate Strategists and Organization Builders Business Administrators / Managers Military Leaders Lawyers / Attorneys Judges Computer Programmers, Systems Analysts and Computer Specialists Business administrators are included in the possible career of an INTJ. Hence, it is not my opinion only that an INTJ is well suited for such career. Perception by Others Others perceive INTJs during negotiations as Too aloof, unfeeling. Afraid to open up in negotiations. Spends too much time on fault finding and not solutions. Won't consider other person's values. Bossy and controlling. Has steam roller style. (in Halverson, n.d.) I have to admit that such are my blind spots. Sometimes, it appears that these weaknesses are enough for people not to deal with an INTJ. However, such can be worked on as I mature. Also, an INTJ's work is of superior quality such that in general the benefits of working with an INTJ is much greater than with other personality types, or even other NT temperament types. Conclusion Pursuing a career in business and finance is one of the most lucrative careers that an INTJ like me can pursue. This is in line with my interest, and I am poised to succeed because the requirements for such career are compatible with my personality type. References Careers for INTJ Personality Types. (2006).
