Along with her husband the Rev. C. Russell Deibler, Darlene spent an idyllic year in a place that fascinated her in terms of its vivid landscape as well as its people. What made the opportunity heaven sent, literally, was the fact that she was doing what she always wanted to do; be a missionary and spread the word of God and bring to Him those they taught and converted to Christianity. The bliss that surrounded the newly-weds was short lived. It came to an abrupt and horrific end with the arrival of the Imperial Japanese Army in 1942.
It wasn't long before they were separated, never to see each other again. There followed long years of torture both physical and mental as well as solitary confinement. Darlene's story is about how she braved the taunts and physical abuse that she was subjected to with dignity and faith. The frail little woman was not only able to come through what was worse than her worst nightmare but keep her sanity, her tremendous sense of humor and above all her faith. It was her unflinching faith in her God that had even her captors grudgingly acknowledge her spiritual powers and hence the power of her God.
Darlene is freed eventually and begins her life anew but returns to the land of her calling with her second husband one more time. Darlene is now no more but the story of her faith and forgiveness has touched the hearts of all who have read her book or heard the radio narration on 'Focus on the Family' program.Potential for Audience Appeal: 'Evidence Not Seen' is a powerful account of a woman's perseverance in the face of extreme odds. The story is thus charged with emotion, sorrow, empathy and righteous indignation all under the single overarching umbrella of the good faith.
The setting for an authentic interpretation requires a 'foreign' landscape - vegetation, streetscapes, people etc that in itself adds to the uniqueness and so appeal of the production. Thus the adaptation of Darlene Deibler Rose's "Evidence not Seen" as a TV drama will qualify supremely for family viewing. It is a gripping story where each episode would be eagerly looked forward to. It is unbelievably unusual in its deep reference to spirituality and God. It is education and entertainment coming together in a winning combination.
Potential for Adaptation to Drama: As elaborated above, the book chosen has great potential for being a highly moving as well as entertaining adaptation on television. With a number of inter-related themes running parallel to each other, there would be a wide variety of
