The National Curriculum: Goals and Philosophical Issues I. Introduction The introduction will give a background of the national curriculum. It aims provide a definition of national curriculum and contextualise it to the UK national education system. Specifically, it will outline the national curriculum for the Early Years Foundation Stage. The introduction will also give a background on the outline of the paper and what it aims to achieve. The paper will examine the goals of the national curriculum and situate it within the philosophy of education.
As such, it will justify the need to examine curriculum against the theoretical background of education.II. The Philosophy of Education This section will give an outline of the different theories of education and what they argue for. It will highlight the works of classical and modern educational philosophies. As education is has been influenced highly by learning principles, this section will discuss the theories in psychology that shaped the education curriculum. This whole section will serve as a background for the arguments that will be presented in the succeeding section.III. Philosophical Issues The national curriculum was introduced for two purposes:(1) to promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society;(2) and to prepare pupils for opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences of adult.
Based on the philosophical and theoretical perspectives discussed above, these purposes will be evaluated. The aims of this section are: (1) to situate the purposes highlighted by the national curriculum on philosophical perspectives of education; and (2) to evaluate the extent that these goals are adhering to the philosophy of education. To be able to do this, various perspectives from scholars and academics will be presented.III. Conclusion The conclusion will summarise the discussions that have been presented.
It will highlight the points of contentions and disagreements with regard to the implementation of the national curriculum. I will present my own perspective with regard to the philosophical issues raised by the objectives stated in the national curriculum. I will end by providing recommendations based on my analysis.
