MY FAVORITE PLACE For some people visiting places of significance can be the catalyst for changing one's outlook on life, recharging one's emotional battery, or growing closer to one's family member or friend. Everyone has a special place, a place where you can be you, where you can find peace and harmony For some it's a quiet place, for others it's a hustling, bustling, and full of people and movement place. But all of these places have one thing in common; they are places where you'd run to in times of both joy and stress.

When I was a teenager, I loved to watch Baywatch Hawaii secretly. The fascination for Hawaii grew more and more after watching every new episode. One odd day, I asked my Dad if he could send me on a vacation to Hawaii. Although I wasn't too optimistic but I was astonished when he agreed and brought the tickets the very same day. After a long flight, I woke up with the biggest smile because I was in Hawaii. I found heaven at twenty-one degrees North and one hundred fifty-six degrees West, in the Pacific Ocean.

Hawaii is heaven. I was in love with this place right at my first glance. From the scenic volcanoes to the picturesque coral reefs, Hawaii is picture perfect. The milieu is immaculate to showcase the contrasting nature. Even the most fastidious people on earth would find it difficult to argue. With the advent of the sun in the morning, I put on my freshly made orchid lei. I enjoy smelling the sweet, floral aroma all day long. The beach appeared tailored to hug the waves of the ocean. I strolled on the beach and could easily spend the entire day over it either listening to my IPOD or simply reading a book.

The warm, soft sand is brownish-tan in color, and it feels so good when my feet sink into it. I love hearing the brilliantly blue ocean calling out to me with its mellifluous voice. The beach also has a very distinct smell, the mixture of tropical tanning oils and the salty ocean water. Going in the ocean is so relaxing, especially when the water has perfect temperature. When I go snorkeling in the coral reefs, I see the most vividly colored tropical fish. I even get the chance to swim up close to the state fish, the humuhumunukunukuapu.

This is where I had to subscribe to the saying "The value of nature cannot be measured but can only be treasured". As the sun set and the crescent moon took charge of the sky at night, the hula dancers took charge of the entertainment. The finesse with which they danced on the beats of the drums made me jump on my seat. Their hips probably moved faster than speed of sound. Their attire in floral lais and grass skirts was very appealing. They were geared in pukka shell necklaces and anklets.

What else do you want from life, I asked myself at that situations. Probably a glass of beer and then came the waiter with it and some mouth watering dinner. I almost wanted to take retirement at this age. And candidly thought that why can't retirement age be lowered from 60 to 18. The unique shells of various shapes and sizes were a delight to watch. The shiny black color of the teeth made them look arcane. I'm enervated by the end of the day as sun soaks up most of the energy and I simply love to bid adieu to it at the end of the day.

It was one of those picture perfect situations where you see yourself kissing your girlfriend with the ocean gulping down the sun in the background and the sky appears to be meeting the ocean. I had all the natural elements in the picture except my girlfriend as she was 3000 miles away. Although I missed my girlfriend, but it gives me immense pleasure in sending creative-looking slug mail to her using interesting stamps. My every trip to Hawaii is usually bifurcated into spending 4 days in Maui and 3 days in The Big Island.

Jet Ski, Scuba diving, Parasailing etc are the activities without which my trip would never be complete. Last but surely not the least was driving on the Hana highway, maneuvering through 600 turn and crossing 50 single lane bridges. I guess Life could no longer be any better. If I ever had to write a book "100 places to see before you die", then I would position Hawaii at the 1st and 100th place. The reason behind it is that this is the place where I want to live and this is the place where I want to die.
