The new student is thrust into the world of all-nighters that require the brain of an Einstein and the endurance of a marathon runner. College is a kaleidoscope of ethnic foods, foreign languages, and international students. The massive workload, demanding schedule, and culture shock combines to make university life far more stressful than high school.High school homework would be a welcome vacation to the college student that is carrying a full credit load. The necessity of solving a complex problem and writing a research paper on the results can bring the new student to the brink of a nervous breakdown.

The desire to do well on a mathematics test can result in beads of perspiration and sweaty palms that were never there in high school. The intensity never ends as the stress of the university's standards makes the student long for the ease of high school subjects. A major component of doing well in college is doing the work on time. In high school, the schedule is made for the student and there is little left to chance. However, college life demands that the student confront the challenges of 18-hour workdays, early morning classes, and conflicting schedules.

College social life can be fun, but the student will risk their mental health by squeezing in a party in an already cramped routine. The high school student may suffer from the boredom of nothing to do, but the university freshman suffers the stress of never having enough time to do it. Confronting a new situation can be as stressful as it is rewarding. In high school, the student feels the security of knowing their classmates, the neighborhood, and the community. Once they step onto the college campus all that familiarity is gone and they feel the pressure of fitting into a daring new lifestyle.

People from all over the world introduce you to new music, strange food, and divergent opinions. You look for something familiar and long for the comfort of high school. The culture shock of life at the university has added another traumatic aspect to your already stressful world. In conclusion, high school students should enjoy their serenity because college life will take all that away. The endless stream of complicated subjects will be far more demanding than any high school student has ever experienced.

Fitting in the need for studying and the need for a social life into an already hectic schedule can drive the freshman to the brink of insanity. The overwhelming need to fit into a world of strangers from strange lands can be a nerve-racking experience that strains our good intentions. Whether it's the workload, the schedule, or the shock of a new culture university life is far more stressful than high school.
