The demand characteristics in some cases influence the choice of transport mode and even the need for safety stocks. The appropriate logistic strategy is essential for any organization as the manufacturing lead time is affected by the product characteristics and design. Globalization is a factor that causes longer lead times as a result of longer distances (Chan and Lee, 2005, p.78). The basis for any logistic strategy is the product. The product pricing is affected by the choice of transport mode. The production flow is smoothened with good demand predictability. Demand predictability is improved with the help of information technology through greater forecasting techniques and transparency (Patton, 1986, p.108). The demand predictability and lead time are the major factors that should be taken into consideration while selecting a logistic strategy. The strategy is selected by adopting the following methods as described in the diagram.
When the lean time is short and demand is predictable continuous replenishment is the preferred strategy by using vendor managed inventory and point of sales data. Postponement strategy is used when there are longer lead times and unpredictable demand by delivering the semi-finished products to third-party logistics service providers who in turn deliver the finished products to the end consumer. A lean strategy is adopted when the demand is predictable and the lead time is longer by sourcing ahead of demand (Gattorna and Walters, 1996, p.360). Finally, agile solutions when the lead time is short and the demand is unpredictable by using cross-functional teams to manage the entire process. Toyota Motors one of the leading companies in Japan uses the just in time approach in its supply chain like most of the companies in Japan. The Japanese companies still do not have a very clear idea about third party logistics.
