The MAS Company is the producer of women’s wear for big brand names that included Victoria’s Secret and GAP. The company is one of Sri Lanka’s largest manufacturers of apparel. It hires more than 33,000 people to work in more than 20 factories in ten countries. The company’s average output exceeds 43 million bras in one year. The company has grown in terms of reputation among its clients from around the world. The popularity of the big name brands is grounded on the exquisite craftsmanship of the MARS Company’s line and staff employees. The company has a good reputation in the eyes of its merchandising clients around the world. The company has complete access to cheap labor. The company has favorable access to distribution networks around the world (Helms 2010).

Weaknesses (Internal). The article correctly shows that the company also has its negative side. First, the company started out initially as a sweatshop company. The workers, including the owners, worked on the shop floors. However, the owners felt that the workers would be more productive if they sew the bras in a comfortable, air-conditioned environment. Second, the company initially engaged in child labor just like other garments factories in Sri Lanka. Further, many Sri Lankan garment companies, including MAS Company during its start-up operations, does not have bathroom breaks, the employees are forced to do overtime work for free, the employees are not allowed weekends off, and some employees have to endure years of physical and sexual abuse.

In addition, the MAS Company’s employees were initially hindered by their local culture from venturing boldly into the open and work in the MAS factories. Fourth, some women employees found it difficult to leave the comfort of their home and family to find a job in the MAS factories within Sri Lanka. The Sri Lanka culture makes leaving the comforts of the Sri Lanka community to work in MAS Company’s factories around the world. ...Download file to see next pages Read More
