31 January The Role of Uncertainty of Outcomeand Scoring in the Determination of Fan Satisfaction in the NFLBy Rodney J. Paul, Yoav Wachsman, and Andrew P. WeinbachThe researchers aim to determine significant factors that contribute to fan satisfaction. In particular, the researcher seeks to find a correlation between uncertainty of outcome and scoring and the satisfaction of the fans in a football match. The method used is more theoretical than empirical in that it uses a regression model that interprets the data provided by the fans rating NFL matches on a scale of 0-100, with 0 being forgettable and 100 being memorable.

The researchers infer that the Margin of Victory does not bring positive effect on fan satisfaction. Conversely, the combined scores of both teams were found to have a positive and significant effect on fan satisfaction (Paul et al. 220). Furthermore, theories of fan behaviour may help in the development of more effective game policies that would allow high scoring, competitive balance and uncertainty of outcome. Although, the researchers did not include other factors that could influence fan rating, hence, the satisfaction of fans in any match.

Factors such as rivalry, the quality and popularity of the team all contribute to fan satisfaction; Margin of Victory does not necessarily entail a negative effect as the lower it becomes so as the uncertainty of outcome.
