MY EXPERINCE IN PURSUIT TO MY CARRIER GOALS AND MY FUTURE CARRIER PATH By Student Name University level Course – Business Name of Professor University affiliation Department 9th June, 2014 I am an African – America male citizen aged 39 years. We lived in Chicago and my father was working in Saint Anthony Hospital before he got transferred to the City of Melbourne Australia to Royal Melbourne Hospital for research and work. From my childhood, my aspirations in life were reshaped by my father who was a medical doctor. I wanted by then if I grow up to pursue similar line of career path and I knew I would receive my Dad’s support. Upon my dad’s transfer, I lost one full year at home not going to school. My mother was a housewife so she had all the times to tell me tales of different animals in the jungle each looking for means of survival. Dad later decided to settle in our new place and he bought for us a house and this was followed by being admitted the following year to continue with my education. When I reached secondary school my mind began to drift away from my dad’s carrier path, I began to appreciate life in terms of assisting other people and carrier related to social work, community development and organizing projects to improve the vulnerable people’s life preoccupied my thinking. I shared this with my mother who encouraged me to go ahead and follow my instincts. My drifting was brought by my peers influence, enrolling in school scout club was the beginning of appreciating the world in a new dimension. I began to see fault in my dads carrier, being absence from us most of the time, and wherever I visited my dad’s work place I never liked the hospital mood, sorrow and despair are in the faces of most people. My dad later got a fatal accident and he passed away leaving us in Australia. Life became very difficult for us to adjust, we had not yet acquired citizens of Australia and we could not qualify for minimum government support to those who are not working. I dropped out of school to assist my mother who resorted to sale vegetables to be able to provide for us. Our relatives were far away some in Africa and Chicago where we moved from. The stories my mother used to tell me resurfaces, I began to appreciate in the other side of struggle to survive. I took up a job in a children home as a social worker; however I only had secondary education. I was satisfied I had a chance to pursue my new aspiration carrier path assisting the vulnerable in the society and offering hope to the disadvantaged. This is the new path I acquired as a scout in my high school, cleaning the city, offering donations to children’s homes. I was brought up in a Christian family so the values of freely sharing together, serving other inspired me a lot, I developed a strong belief that the basis for greatness is in the service to others. As a social worker, I used to wake up very earning in the morning and was fully determined to serve. The owners of the home notified my passion and they called me one day to inquire more on me and my driving force in life and my family background. Later my salary was increased and I was promoted to be in-charge of children welfare department. I was to compose for them songs, coordinate prayer meetings, and train them on the basic life skills. When I began dealing with children my approach was to create in their mind pictures of hope and to build confidence in them that one day their destiny is in the hands of God regardless of circumstances surrounding their situation. I did my job role to my perfection and the management witnessed great improvement of children behavior, they were more discipline in approach to adults and most of them changed. The management called me again, this time with a different offer; they were to sponsor my university education on part time basis to pursue degree in social work and community development. In the job I acquired great people skills, interpersonal skills, and managing and coordinating events. I developed fluency in communication, I began to read more books to expand the scope of my understanding and be able to address my life fears like having only secondary school education. My past career path has been influenced more by my parents and environment interactions. Brown and Lent (2011,p56) cited bandura’ social learning theory. Peoples’ career gets influenced by social interactions. James (2004,p 5) noted that home influence to a childs learning is the fundamental concepts in life. My carrier decisions as a young person, I could only see life in terms of my fathers’ carrier. Later my mother brought in different stories in my life and training to appreciate nature and be able to stand for the oppressed and offer hope to the disadvantaged people in the society, during my high school the location and scout club I joined only unveiled whatever virtues my mother had instilled in me through her tales. Career plays a very significant role in the life of an individual, it determine a persons personality, dictates the kind of income you can take home, and reshapes a persons world view (Daws 2003, p.15). Career choice should be based on personality, whatever we learn and aspiration we develop in life as we maneuver the life challenges and continues reshape our thinking in line with the new technology and adaptation to change. Part II My future career Immediately after completing my degree I would like to go back to Chicago where I was born and where most of my extended relatives still lives to open up a consultancy firm in child counseling and organization development trainings. This is an area that has not fully been exploited though has a remarkable growth potentials. I need to pass over the management skills and child training dynamics to others which I have acquired over the years and my need to drift is pushed by my new family needs to pursue my own dreams as my wife is an entrepreneur would like us to thing in that line which I have agreed. To succeed I would have to pursue management courses and organization change dynamics trainings to equip myself outside the social work training I acquired during my undergraduate. The current business environment requires knowledge and systematic approach, however with the blending my wife who has been in business from the last 12 years am confidence she is bringing in that experience to our family venture. The key skills required is negotiations skills, coordination skills, human resource skills, public speaking, good communication skills and ability to forecast change and be able to pursue avenues of doing things in a smarter ways , to improve efficiency and embrace continuous improvement. Apart from enrolling in an evening management masters class, I will be watching movies of successful entrepreneurs and learn their failures as well as their successes. My particular interest would be the steps they did to succeed. By using the test, currently my decision choice is influenced much by the various opportunities that are offered to me by the environment through chance by recognizing them and adapting to the outcomes. I tend to be flexible to change, and embraces change as a way for continuous improvement for individual and for organizations. Accepting to join business as away of pursuing our dream was not easy but I had to accept it owing to the fact that it will open up my world view, to be an employee to some people with degrees, to truly offer hope as I continue to engage in broader goals of corporate social responsibility and child welfares programmes. Future career goals is like a road map, any driver on the road who does not know where he or is going will end nowhere. May likely cause accident on the way and can easily get lost. To avoid such, life career choices and options for the future are very important for any one who do not want to use chance to be the basis of moving his or her life. Future goals should be worked on daily, break down your goals into short term and long term goals. As a person once said, any successful person make early decisions in their life and work on those decisions daily, it is important for each and every human being in this journey of life to walk with focus, knowing exactly what you want and how to get what you want through developing career goals and chatting a definite career path.
