Report On a Design/Plan of a Food & Beverage Outlet Made From a Shipping Container Name: Instructor: Course Unit: Date: Introduction: Shipping containers have turned out to be a solid waste problem globally, a problem that embraces not only the expenditure and complexities of managing solid wastes, but one that also echoes wasted non-renewable resources as well (Vidal 2002). Thus the concept of reusing shipping containers has both environmental and economic benefits that are not delved in this report. Just as they can be craftily piled and altered into outsized accommodation complexes, shipping containers are absolutely appropriate for use as Food and Beverage outlets. This report thus explores the opportunities involved in putting into practice a Food and beverage outlet emerging from a shipping container as part of the Avant Garde Art festival. It in particular describes how; the interior to the container, the Food and Beverage service areas and the immediate areas surrounding the container, and the customer areas will appear. It looks into this by also giving in both words and diagrams/plans of the immediate area surrounding the 'container' where customers can chomp through their purchases. Background: The international Avant Garde art exhibition is a foremost experience on the global art arena. It is not just the art that is significant but also the experience of the festival itself. As a component of the event a food and beverage outlet has been devoted by an international hotel company, as part of a sponsorship deal. The outlet is to be a talking point at the festival, be a focus for media concentration as well as emphasize as an ingredient of the hotel's marketing plan the Avant Garde positioning of the hotel. The idea of the outlet as well as its immediate surrounds is that it will be a piece of artwork itself. The outlet will come out from a seemingly standard shipping container, whose measurements are as in Figure 1 below. During the late afternoon of the first day of the festival, the food and beverage outlet will 'emerge' from the container as a media event. This will lead into the early evening where it will be the centre piece for a themed special event. At this special event only some food & beverages shall be supplied from the container outlet, this will encompass a Tapas-style menu, as shown in appendix 1. For the remaining of the festival it will operate day to day as a food and beverage outlet. On the final day of the festival it will be packed backed into the shipping container. The intention is, in the future, to be able to use the 'container’ at other major festivals globally. Advantages of Using the Shipping Container: The standard shipping containers makes a structural sense, in that they are fabricated with heavy-gauge corten-steel to make them sturdy and comparatively resistant to elements such as, fire, insect damage and other natural and man-made hazards. Indeed their formation beats the United States structural code and any other nation globally (Urbanist 2009). The assemble technique is affordable and efficient in achieving the swiftness of construction, hence reducing local distraction, environmental pollution and minimizing revenue-generation delay. With reliable high assemble quality, its durability, definite schedule as well as tight budgetary control, the use of the shipping container enhances standards of this project efficiency. Above all, the container can be easily repacked, fitted together and transported by road, so that it can be used anywhere else and even hired for during other events. The standard shipping container size implies that it’s an outstanding modular unit and its innate strength, heavy-duty nature and accessibility makes it a perfect modular structural constituent for the food and beverage outlet (Sawyers 2008, pp39). Design of the Food and Beverage Outlet: As earlier on stated the food and beverage outlet shall be constructed from a 20’ standard shipping container. It will be retrofitted with an up-to-the-minute kitchen (having a remote refrigerator and a dry-store), a service area and an immediate surrounding capable of accommodating twenty-eight customers at ago, where they will be capable of munching through their purchases. On top of the roof will be solar panels to generate two-fifths of the food and beverage outlet energy requirements, and the remaining three-fifths will come from propane to run especially the kitchen devices. The floor of the container shall be made from reused tires, which is preferred because of its performance traits and is both water-resistant and uncomplicated when cleaning (Meinhold 2009). The whole inner walls and ceiling openings shall be sprayed-foam insulated with the most up-to-date eco-friendly Soya insulation accessible on the market nowadays. It is inflexible ‘closed-cell’ insulation, which doesn’t allow moisture transfer (Urbanist 2009). All the internal walls will also be clear-coat birch polished with a concealed binding system and spruced with aluminum. There will be no any noticeable mechanical clasps in the wood finish.  The roof will also have a chimney emanating from the kitchen, and a collapsible roof that can be pulled to cover each of the two lengths of the container; this is illustrated in the figure 3 below. The two collapsible roof tops shall be made from a white tent material that is coated with a resin; the resin material will provide high ultra-violent rays resistance, while the white color will reflect light and heat thus allowing the occupants to experience a cool atmosphere (Smith & Ferrara, p. 45-70). The tent material is preferred because it highly preserves tensile and tear strength over long-drawn-out exposure to open-air environment and subsequent to frequent laundering. The roof tops for the widths will be the doors that open and close horizontally. A water harvesting system will also be fitted that is capable of recycling the water in the kitchen (Sigal 2008, pp. 35-170). Source: Meinhold, B 2009. ‘Architecture’ Fig. 3: Illustration of the Outlet when opened and the roof tops prolonged Each of the 20 foot side of the shipping container will be cut out and then re- assemble the two steel walls into decks that shall be hinged back to the unit, each with 6 custom-premeditated counterbalance hinges that shall permit the decks to position flat as well as fit into their original locations when locked, this illustrated in figure 4 below. Considering the fact that, they are reasonably heavy; two twelve Volts winch gears that have each a lifting power of about 4000lbs shall be applied to open and close the two decks (Broeze 2002, pp. 439-440). Their twelve volt batteries shall be powered from the two eighty watts solar panels. Incase the outlet is to be left ideal for an comprehensive period of time, the decks shall be shut by turning over the electrical panel switch to furnish the power to the twelve volt winches and the access shuts by way of a handheld remote control (Meinhold 2009). It will take almost a minute to lock and with the side doors locked, the outlet will once more go back to the form and strength of the shipping container, as shown in figure 5 below. The outer wall finishing shall be given an artistic painting as shown in figure 5 above, so as to go in hand with the theme of the Avant Garde art exhibition (Broeze 2002, pp. 439-440). Conclusion: The food and beverage shipping container outlet shall be lustrous as well as contemporary, scarcely tip-offing at the recycled in addition to sustainable temperament of the structure. The outlet has got many advantages for instance; it can be conveyed by means of train, van, cargo plane or helicopter and when packed backed, it bears a resemblance to a characteristic shipping container. Once set up, it will spread out to cover an area of approximately four hundred and eighty square-feet. Given the theme of Avant Garde art exhibition and its global experience, this outlet will stand out to be the centre of attraction to the media and the talking point at the festival, as well as an emphasis ingredient of the hotel's marketing plan to the Avant Garde positioning of the hotel.
