The paper 'What is The Status of Strategy in Sport Management Today' is a great example of a Management Case Study. Sports management is a concept that has highly been embraced in different sports in the world. The need for effective sport management resulted in the development of sport management courses and training programs in the world. Since then, sport managers have been employing different strategies to enhance the growth and development of different sports in the world. This paper evaluates the status of sport management strategies today. The paper has been divided into different sections that include the introduction part that gives an overview of sport management. This is followed by background information section where the growth and development of sport management and earlier strategies are discussed. The following section discusses business management strategies employed in other enterprises other than sport. This is followed by the discussion of strategic management in the sports industry and identifying the gap between strategic management in other corporate sectors and sports. Different examples of each identified strategy are given. The paper then focuses on the status of strategy management in soccer and athlete where sport management strategies for soccer and athlete are reviewed with consideration of the theories of the sport. The paper finally gives a brief conclusion.

Introduction

The modern sports industry is multifaceted and contains distinctive management, business, and legal practices. Consequently, the industry organization is more unique as compared to all other business industries. Sports organizations developed over the last 150 years and still continues to grow and develop, enhancing the manageability of the industry in all categories. For instance, sport managers have recently been mending the structures that include playoff, drafts, and conference alignment conferences. Thus, a lot is being done to enhance sport management and to keep up with management strategy changes, brought about by technological changes to ensure that the strategies remain relevant and applicable in different situations (Masteralexis et al., 2011).

Sport is a vibrant industry that involves multibillion-dollar. Its admiration span across the globe. From simple intercollegiate athletics and pick-up games in the neighborhood to the Olympic and Australian Rules football, transcends and sport hypnotizes audiences across the borders. Consequently, sport is experiencing incredible growth at all levels. This tremendous growth and involvement of a huge amount of money in the industry creates a great interest in the study of how the industry is managed (Pedersen & Miloch, 2007). Sports management is defined as an integration of skills associated with planning, evaluating, organizing, leading, directing, budgeting, and controlling in the context of a department or organization whose prime service or product is associated with physical activity or/and sport. Among the services and products associated with sport include sports management academic programs, recreational sports programs, sport news media, military, and industrial sports programs, developmental sports program, corporate-sponsored sporting occasions, and sporting goods. This paper focuses on evaluating the status of the strategy of sport management. It evaluates the status of strategies employed to enhance sport management. In this case, the paper focuses on different sporting areas to accomplish this.

Sport Management Background Information

Sport is among the swiftly growing industries in the world and thus, its management has recently been given much importance particularly in the United States among other developed nations. The sport management need was first noted in 1957 when a scholar by the name Walter O’Malley posted a question regarding training and provision of knowledge in various sport-related aspects that included race track, league, and stadium as well as other art-related activities, This question was posted to Columbia University professor who found the necessity of establishing a sports management program. The first sports management program was therefore established in Ohio University in the United States in 1966. Nearly 20 years later, there was an establishment of the North American Sports Management Society in the 1985/1986 academic period. This was followed by the publication of the first Sport Management Journal in 1987, which addressed sport management based on management practice and theory. The journal cantered on play, sport, dance, and exercise because the activities were employed by all popularity sectors (Andrew et al., 2011).
