Introduction
Airside performance manager's position is a very critical position that ensures all Ground operations of the base as well as support to all the airside operations is adequately provided. The manager must be able to consistently and excellently deliver on the safety operations and timely performance. Among other duties, the manager is supposed to be in-charge of managing the performance of the supplier and airport that relates to Ground handling, cleaning of the aircraft, catering related operations and logistics as well as presentation and airfield performance. In order to clearly articulate all his duties and responsibilities as provided in the job description, the manager would have to classify these operations under three main general objectives with several specific objectives. The main general objectives will include; to maintain quality, safety and compliance, to ensure effective and efficient airport operational performance and enlargement, and to ensure on-time performance of duties. When these three objectives are performed and met effectively, the manager will be able to drive the base to meet the demands of the customers. It will be possible by providing superior and top quality service to the customers at a competitive price. The paper is, therefore, aimed at critically looking at these three top objectives of the airside performance manager, in a more elaborate manner.
To Maintain Quality, Safety, and Compliance
Under this objective, the airside performance manager will be required to have adequate knowledge about the airline and the operation procedures of the local standards. This will help him in decision making to ensure that all decisions are made according to required airline operation guidelines and are in compliance with the local standard safety and quality airline procedures. The manager will have to ensure he puts up and review a safety policy regularly to be in compliance with the set standards. By ensuring that risk areas are marked and proper safety precautions are adhered to all the time, the manager will also ensure there’s total safety in the airline. The manager must also be able to know how to deal with risk situations in times of accidents and disaster management. He will therefore ensure first aid kits are installed in all the buildings and offices to help in times of emergency. He will also have to ensure that the airline is equipped with adequate fire extinguishers to assist in putting off the fire during any time of emergency. To provide top quality services at the airside, he will have to form clear short-term objectives and have clear way of achieving them. He must also have a clear strategy and apply motivational practices to his crew to be able to work harder in providing such top quality services.
The manager will also be in the first level management class that will help him achieve his objective by delegation. Therefore, he will have to oversee various work groups within various division agencies. He will also be responsible to supervise first or second level supervisors and a number of individual contributors. However, for him to do that, he will be charged with the responsibility to provide technical knowledge and support through various means such as training, to the Head office and Ground Operations. He must show that he is in charge, not by showing the title of his position, but by providing direct guidelines and training for each sector of operation. He then needs to lead by example, where, he must demonstrate excellent knowledge of the practices required of all the first and second level supervisors as well as those of the individual contributors.
The manager will also have to ensure that the inside of the aircraft is safe from any risk. To be able to this, he will have to equip the aircraft with several risk management tools and adequate training. He will also have his team monitor the airline functions at the base and from other airport networks. He will ensure that he provides safety precaution and readiness guide during winter when there is ice. He will be required to help in this situation by carrying out de-icing process to do away with the ice and make facilitate safe mobility. In order to keep up with total compliance, the manager will have to carry out periodic audits by checking the reports and operations of each department or division under him. He will also be required to spearhead the investigations of the key safety events in the airline. The manager will constitute a committee of investigation which he will chair to look into such investigations.
To Ensure Effective and Efficient Airport Operational Performance and Engagement
Here, the manager must work in collaboration with other people in their dockets to ensure they achieve the objective together. This way, they will be able to handle the aircraft ground handling activities in consultations with one another to help them achieve effective and better results. To do that, he will have to assign some people from his team to the airline to take charge of the day to day operational performance and other supplier related activities at the airport. Some of these activities will include carrying out the respective activities of the airside ground handling. This team will ensure the aircraft is of the correct and required weight after parking, and before the dispatch. They will also take part in loading and arranging the aircraft in a decent manner. In case there is any fishy object found during loading and cleaning, they will have to report it to the Airport Operations manager who will take charge of the investigation.
For proper operations performance at the airside, the manager will assign a team of workers of the FoH team. This will let him gain knowledge about such processes to help him execute his duties appropriately and proactively. During winter, the manager will be required to aid in de-icing and carrying out other winter operations to allow for safe and secure mobilization of the aircraft.
The manager will also assign another team who will use professional knowledge to deliver and reconcile the baggage. He will divide this team into groups to ensure everyone has his work very clear. It will also be very important to have under his department, personnel who will take part in training the airside passengers. This will also assist in reducing casualties as well as improve working relations with the airline crew. The manager will have to have some of his men who are qualified caterers do the work under a supervisor who will be reporting directly to him. He will also require a list of workers who will be responsible for washing the aircraft, arranging and ensuring all its interior décor is well done.
To Ensure On-time Performance
To be able to achieve this objective, the manager must have all his duties well-arranged and controlled by a system. He will therefore require to have all the schedules of all the airline operations to help him fix an in-time schedule for his team. He will be guided by a schedule of events which will be based on timely performance. For instance, for him to execute certain duties in his docket, he will need budgetary allocation of funds. He will therefore have to ensure that all the subdivisions under his docket prepare and approve their budgets early enough to allow timely allocation of funds. He will also have to know the material consumption capacity of his operations so that he can do adequate stock taking in advance for the operations not to be delayed because of lack of certain materials. He will also need to ensure adequate personnel are deployed to various sections of operation to provide timely delivery of services. He will also have to employ proactive method of operation to ensure very minimal number of emergencies emerge.
Conclusion
Airside Performance Manager is tasked with numerous managerial duties. However, for him to be able to achieve all these duties effectively, he needs to classify these duties under three distinct objectives as discussed above. When he completes all the operations under each objective, he accomplishes his work to achieve his major objectives.
