Personal and Professional Identity ment Personal and Professional Identity ment Before I write my personal ment expressing my ambitions and reasoning for my pursuit of a career in surgery, I will first of all react to an article referred to as “Answering that call”, drafted by Dr. Cossman David. The reason why I am mentioning this article is because it struck me as a surprise because Dr. David is describing the declining state of the profession that is surgery and exposes how the talents achieved over many years of industry have become less and less esteemed. In his article, Crossman unmasks all the negatives attributed to a career surgery like mounting financial concerns, the overall health care settings on the periphery of needing life support, a future lifestyle that is not easily controlled as compared to other professional careers as well as a lengthy residency program that he says is not relevant. Why should I conform to David’s truths before I write my personal statement? I strongly believe it is imperative that I educate myself about all the aspects of surgery as a vocation, both positive and negative, which will make me proudly shield my decision to shadow a career in surgery.
Personal vision, values and philosophy
I am a very illustrious, intelligent and very straight forward person. I believe in working hard for a better tomorrow, and strongly hold onto the notion that hard work pays. And indeed it does. As a surgeon, it is my mission to make sure that quality healthcare is made accessible and of high quality as well. Since being a surgeon gives me the opportunity to potentially transform the lives of my patients, I personally believe that surgery is an opportunity to strengthen the communities that we serve through the providence of health care services. It is my vision to serve my community through expanding the opportunities for personal and professional growth through my commitment to the providence of warm, friendly and personalized medical care to all my patients.
My greatest philosophy is adherence to ethical practice. As a surgeon, I deal with human beings, who should be treated with utmost respect and confidentiality. That is ethics. Effective interaction with service users and patients is yet another philosophy I hold as imperative. The way a doctor interacts with the patients directly affects the whole doctor patient relationship, so it should be positive right from the moment a surgeon meets a new patient. The same goes for interactions with staff. Cooperation and effective interactions make working together in the hospital setting an enjoyable experience. My other philosophy is dependability and obligation to improvement. A doctor should be dependable and should commit him or herself to improving himself both personally and professionally.
Ambitions in life
My ideal aims in life are many. First of, I would personally love to be the most acknowledged and celebrated surgeon of all time. Many are the surgeons with great stories, like Ben Carson. Many more are well celebrated all over the world, and I would like to surpass them and become the best surgeon to walk the face of the earth. In would like to achieve the highest ranks in medical surgery that has ever been achieved by any greatest mind in the world of medical science. The desire to succeed is what gives me the energy as well as motivation I want as an individual. Success may be defined differently varying from one person to another. To me, success is becoming the best in any undertaking: becoming the best surgeon in the world.
My family also gives me the motivation to succeed. My father and mother have been very supportive in my expedition of education, and letting them down would be an immense upset. My father is one of the best attorneys in the history of any court, and my ambition is to closely follow his suit and become the best in my field too. My fathers’ success drives me towards achieving the highest results possible from my career as a surgeon. My siblings also motivate me. My younger brother is extremely intelligent, and I have a strong feeling that he will reach the greatest heights in engineering, a field he has so much interest in. I know he is well on the path to becoming great, and I will confirm my greatness before he does attain his in order to motivate him to add more grease to his elbows too.
Intellectual agenda
Academically, my love for human anatomy found me drawn back to the gross labs of human anatomy. Back when I was a kid, I used to be fascinated about the heart, because it is what keeps us alive, and once it stops, every other system, even though in perfect working conditions, would shut down. This is why I became a cardiology surgeon. On growing much older, I came to notice that the brain is much more complex than the heart in its working. The brain sets us aside, and distinguishes us from the rest of the humans because it is what controls all our actions and makes us who we are. This is why I have lately developed so much interest in the functioning of the brain, and given an opportunity and time, I would study more about the brain and how it works.
The brain is a very interesting organ. We all have a brain, and functions in the same way. Supposing all the mature people in Britain are given a plain paper and a simple topic to write on, like the wonders of science for instance. It is almost given that no two submissions will be exactly the same, even if we are all commonly talking about the one “science” we all know about. This is the most fascinating thing about the brain, it is the same, it helps us reason, but we all cannot reason in the same way. This is why I am so interested in knowing more about the brain, how it works and experience how corrective surgery to the brain is done. In fact, I find myself reading extensively any article or book I come across with a focus on the brain. It is such a wonder!
Career and life expectations
Regarding my career and life expectations, I plan on mastering the art of surgery in all the resident programs I will join. Since my determinations find me in academic setting, I will see to it that the surgical practice is indorsed in the highest standards possible. I also enjoy travelling a lot, so while I occasionally satisfy my travelling desires, I will do so with a burning lust of medical missions all over the world applying and supplying all the much needed medical health care assistance. Personally, I would love to travel to Africa, Asia, more of like all the continents in the world and get an insight into what happens in their medical field of surgery.
Personally, I expect my life to grow positively. Travelling around the world in pursuit of knowledge is the key to making my future better. Augmenting my knowledge in medial surgery, I will also learn the traditions and lifestyles of the places I hope to travel to. This will add cultural richness in my life because I love learning other people’s traditions and values. The surgical societies and institutions should also increase the interest in surgery among the medical students as well as provide well training programs that will strictly adhere to the compatibility of family life settings. The restrictive budgetary policies in the health sector should be done away with to ensure that there is no lack of general workforce in the near future.
Self Assessment Questionnaires Explanations
Assessing the environment
On accessing the environment, I often use the assessment tools to systematically learn the needs of the community. Once I collect the data, appropriately analyze it after gathering information shortly before I take action. I clarify the problems before planning solutions and I highly encourage people to act on information rather than assumptions. These are my strengths as a collaborative leader. I need to improve on seeking different cultural views on scientific problems as well as looking at problems from different angles before proceeding.
Visioning and Mobilizing
I expedite an operative process for exploring the diverse aspirations among all the community stakeholders by communicating a shared vision with everyone. I create a framework for actions using systematic thinking, and I often include the stakeholders in developing strategic action plans. Action plans are built with time schemes and I assign to ensure the community vision is attained. This done, I make follow ups on the action plans to ensure that they are duly completed. The area I need improvement on is seeking innovative solutions to problems that are tenacious while mobilizing the achievement of the set vision.
Building trust
As a leader, I always create a dependable ally for collaborations, creating processes for people to say what is on their minds. I also guarantee that the process is open to all the stakeholders to avoid ambiguity. While creating relationships, I always inaugurate a common ground among the stakeholders, building trust among them. I often walk the talk, and validate to my peers that trust is the basis for prosperous collaborations. The only area I need improvement on is the process of engaging in the “rigid” process.
Sharing power and influence
I almost always use my power responsibly, sharing it with others whenever possible. I often offer people an active role in decision making, promoting self confidence in them. I create processes that ensure an equivalent say in decision making. I always express confidence in other people’s capabilities, while being open to being influenced by others. I use my sway to produce results where feasible. I need to improve on using peer problem solving.
Developing people
As a leader, I always define my roles when serving as coach. I take my responsibility for training people seriously and I invest my considerable time doing that for them to become more successful in their jobs. I succor people take advantage of opportunities where they can learn a thing or two. I establish my expectations for the people I lead, matching them against theirs, creating a mutually agreed upon coaching blueprints. I should advance on developing people from diverse subdivisions of the population.
Self Reflection
As an individual, I can describe my strengths and weaknesses realistically. I read extensively on group dynamics and recognize the effects of my emotions on work performance, relationships and impacts on group dynamics. I actively listen to others, while reading non verbal communication from others. I use the self assessment tools like personality to inform my self reflections. I should improve on seeking feedback from all relevant people on the impact of my behavior on them and my work.
