A Cause for Paws" Affiliation) “A Clause for Paws” is a Purdue organization aimed at helping as well as bettering the lives of animals mostly pets that are in need. Additionally, the organization is dedicated to help no-kill animal shelters in the Lafayette area and its outskirts. The student organization also tries to educate individuals on the benefits of adopting pets from no-kill shelters. These members are charged with raising awareness of the number of animals, which are currently in shelters at the same time motivating and encouraging shelters that are already euthanizing animals into becoming no-kill shelters. According to the organization’s organizing secretary, Caitlin Roberts, “A Clause for Paws” started thirteen years ago by a small group of students after an incident. These students were going about their normal life campus when witnessed an accident involving a car and a dog, which was later named Bu-Bu. In the morning of 1999, Bu-Bu was unfortunate to be hit by car, which left him severely injured. Since no one could afford to pay for his treatment, Bu-Bu was going to be put down. Luckily enough, Bu-Bu ran into the right people at a time he truly needed them. This small group of students from Perdue University did a lot of hard to make sure that Bu-Bu lived happily after the sad incident. They managed to achieve this, through raising money that was needed to nurse him. These students had to look for means in which they could contribute the money required for both the treatment and upkeep; they went ahead and asked well-wishers to donate towards the kitty. Apart from depending on well-wishers, the group also sought assistance from the University’s administration, which responded positively. The group also developed long-term strategy and plans that would foresee more of abandoned animals being taken care of. It is because of the group’s determination that Bu-Bu managed to live happy, safe and healthy environment. Caitlin Roberts also affirms that literally, Bu-Bu was the founder of the group since the incident made the students to think of forming an organization whose main purpose was to take care of plenty of animals that had been abandoned in Lafayette-West area. The students realized that there were many animals being held under euthanizing shelters and environment or even abandoned each day. Some of these animals would face threats like being poisoned by the local authorities in need to eradicate stray dogs and cats. Many innocent animals that are abandoned by their families more often than not faced threats such as being hit by teenagers ho find fun in doing so, attacked by dangerous wild animals and the changing weather conditions (Long, 2004). Initially, the group did a little research about the project they about to get into. In between their research, they came across Tony Raimondo who had been rescuing animals for the last twenty years. Tony gave them the insights into the projects highlighting in depth on the challenges as well as the needs one would need in order to be successful in such a project. Tony’s determination of recuing a number of dogs and even starting a veterinary care centre for these dogs, encouraged these students more. Roberts asserts that Tony’s non-profit organization rescues almost nine dogs and cats a week from the city’s killer shelter and the surrounding building around Bronx, New York. From Tony’s organization, the group learned the necessities are well as the responsibilities that come along with keeping of pets. These responsibilities included feeding them, giving them veterinary care (spraying and neutering) and behavioural and obedience trainings. “A Cause for Paws,” recruits member in the beginning of every academic year. Currently, the organization has eleven officials and thirty members though ten members have requested to leave the organization because of other personally commitments that would deter them from being actively involved in the organizations daily activities. For one to join the organization, he or she has to be a student of Perdue University since the same organization is registered under the university’s guiding policies and rules. Moreover, the organization has started to recruit members twice, that is, at the beginnings of both Fall and Spring semesters, unlike before when the organization used to recruit one once. Additionally for one to become a member he or she has to part away with ten dollars for the semester or fifteen dollars for the whole year. These funds go towards the supplies that club needs on a regular basis as well as the fun activities that members would occasionally engage in. additionally, the funds also cater for the annual end end-year trip, which closes the organization’s calendar of events. The organization usually holds weekly or bi-weekly meetings, which often happen on Tuesdays in Lily G-126 at 6:00pm. The meetings always happen unless a change of event is communicated in advance through the website. However, the members are always encouraged too regularly check the website for new updates as well as double-check the room number in which the meeting is to take place. Additionally, the any latest news is often communicated through the club’s Facebook page and Twitter handler. For one to be considered as an active member, he or she must at least six meetings, participates in at least four club activities and pay his or her dues in time. At the end of every academic year, all the active members will be eligible to go on the end-year trip, which is usually captivating and exciting. However, one does not need to be an active member for him or her to be in the organization. The club requires that anyone wishing to sign up to be a volunteer, to always attend all the meetings and volunteer for trips to the animal shelter and for any other services that maybe required of him or her. Apparently, the club helps the pets in addressing any issues that they may be having concerning their new life in the permanent and loving home. The clubs manages to address these issues through training them and as such prepare them to live humbly in their new habitat. Since the club does not have a shelter of its own, it organizes for foster homes until when these pets would be adopted by new and loving families. For the animals to be handed over to a new family, a thorough screening process is often done on these families in order to prevent these animals from facing future abuse or abandonment. The club also helps in education the public on the benefits of spaying and neutering. More so, the club is involved in creating awareness on the consequences of breeding as well as buying animals. Thus, the public is encouraged to continue saving the lives of these animals. The club does anything under its capability to make sure that these animals have a chance to lead a good life. This club is attractive because it volunteers for many animal-related causes in the society and raises awareness for these animal causes in the society. Again, the club is well organized structured and straightforward. Indeed anyone who has love for a peaceful coexistence between the animals and the society like me would probably be attracted to this club. However, the club should have non- students as members, for instance a few members from the community should be recruited since the goals and purpose of the club directly touches the surrounding community.
