As an average, the Trust has between sixty and eighty employee relations cases ongoing and the impact of these is significant in terms of those costs mentioned above. In addition, a problem which has been heightened during the last twelve months is that the sheer volume of cases has meant that the human resource function has been unable to adequately develop either in service provision or by developing and implementing more efficient working practices, so much so that external consultants have been appointed to undertake employee relation work on behalf of the TrustThis study seeks to examine and identify why Bradford District Care Trust experiences a high level of employee relation cases and the impact that these have on the immediate environment as well as the overall organisation.

It looks at some of the challenges lying ahead and some possible ways forward.It is a common misconception that employee relations are concerned solely with managing the relationship between trade unions and organizations. Historically prior to the 1990s this would have been a more accurate assessment but the term used to describe that relationship would have been industrial relations. The use of the term employee relations is relatively new and emerged with the development of the concept of human resource management (HRM) which distinguished differences from the traditional model of personnel.
