Interview Introduction Managers of the organizations play a vital role in its growth and development. A manager encourages its subordinates and influences them in performing various works and activities. Different types of managerial styles are used by the managers for increasing the productivity of the company. A manager contributes a lot in developing the policies and practices of a company. He analyzes the things which motivate the employees and as per the analysis he provides financial and non financial rewards to them for improving their performances. This essay will explain the views and opinions of a manager regarding different things which influences the productivity and performance of a company. Jan Fitters is one of the managers of Philips Lighting. In this interview he has discussed his managerial styles, motivational ways, ethical problems etc. All of these things will be highlighted in this essay. The type of managing style used by the manager The manager, Jan Fitter uses participative management style for managing his subordinates effectively. This is also known as democratic style which helps the manager in establishing consensuses and commitment among the employees. A large number of employees work under Jan Fitters. He is responsible for managing, encouraging and motivating the employees. For this reason the manager has created a good relationship with the employees for understanding them properly. He takes input from his subordinates for developing any business plans and decisions. He always encourages employees for participating in decision making processes. All of the subordinates of Jan Fitters work in teams. Therefore the participative management style used by this manager help the employees in doing their teamwork efficiently. This management style also increases employee involvement and participation in different functions and processes of the company. Jan Fitters improves the communication and co-ordination among the employees by using participative management style. These processes facilitate him in developing innovating and creative ideas which help the company in increasing its revenues and sales. While developing strategies the manager takes consent from the employees. By this way he makes the employees feel that they hold important positions in the company and the growth and development of the company cannot take place without their participation. How the manager uses team projects The manager, Jan Fitters of Philips is very efficient in managing and using team projects. He first determines the objectives and the purposes of the team project for making the teamwork effective. He discusses the objectives and purposes of the project with the team members and makes them understand about its importance. He organizes various meetings to look after the effectiveness of the functions which are incorporated in the team projects. For implementing a team project effectively he discusses with all the team members the necessary steps they need to follow for achieving the objectives of the project successfully. Jan Fitters uses software for understanding performance of the team members. He uses team projects for achieving the goals and objectives of the company. After achieving success in any team project, the manager uses the project as an example to his subordinates for improving their performance and productivity. By this process he provides necessary knowledge and learning to the employees which make them understand how they need to perform for increasing the productivity of the company. Intrinsic and extrinsic rewards used by the manager Rewards always motivate the employees in performing their job efficiently. Many companies have incorporated this reward system for encouraging organizational members in achieving their goals and objectives. Jan Fitters also provides extrinsic and intrinsic rewards to his subordinates. By providing these rewards he satisfies the employees in various ways. The needs and demands of the employees are also fulfilled by rewards. Jan Fitters has to look after the sales department of Philips Lighting. A huge number of employees work under the guidance of this manager. They have to sell various lighting products of Philips. When these employees achieve the sales target then he provides financial or extrinsic rewards to them. This type of reward includes bonuses, incentives, etc. Extrinsic rewards are given by the manager for encouraging employees to achieve the sales target efficiently. Jan Fitters also provides intrinsic rewards to the employees by providing them challenging jobs, involving them in taking decisions, giving them good position etc. This type of reward provides mental satisfaction to the employees. Intrinsic reward helps to increase commitment of the employees towards the organization (Price, 2011). By using both financial and non financial rewards the manager handles his job role and responsibilities effectively. Ethical issues that manager has to deal with? If so, what are they? The manager Jan Fitters has to deal with some ethical issues for performing the business activities effectively. This manager controls the marketing and sales department of various lighting goods produced by Philips. Employees involved in these marketing activities try different ways and techniques for selling the products. Often they try to sell the products by giving false commitments which hampers the reputation of the business. They do this type of activities for fulfilling their targets quickly. Jan Fitters says that being a manager he has to solve this ethical problem. He makes the employees understand that by opting dishonest means they cannot stay in the organization. He motivates the employees in following honest path for fulfilling their targets. Sometimes he also gives punishment to the employees for doing false commitments. Another important ethical issue this manager has to face is about employee behavior. Different types of employees work under Jan Fitters. The behavior of the employees differs a lot from each other. For this reason conflicts take place among the employees. The manager handles this ethical issue by grooming the employees properly. He makes his subordinates understand about the behavior they need to follow for working in Philips by providing necessary training and guidance. Motivating the employees Jan Fitters stated that he implements various ways for motivating the employees. Motivation plays a significant role in enhancing the productivity and performance of the employees. If an employee is motivated properly then his commitment toward the company becomes very strong which facilitate the organization in achieving its goals and objectives successfully. Jan Fitters supports the new ideas which are provided by his subordinates for developing new practices and processes. He empowers every employee for performing his job responsibilities. After achieving the targets, Jan Fitters motivates the employees by celebrating the success. If an employee delivers very good performance then his achievement is highlighted. Different types of rewards are provided by this manager which contributes a lot in motivating the employees (Price, 2011). He encourages friendly competition among his subordinates for increasing their productivity. Jan Fitters establishes good communication among his subordinates for maintaining a healthy relationship with them. This helps the manager in influencing and motivating the employees easily. Goals and objectives of the project or the business are set clearly by him. This facilitates his subordinates in performing their job efficiently. Conclusion This essay focuses on the views and opinions of the manager, Jan Fitters, regarding his managerial style and different other topics which he faces for managing large number of people who are working under his guidance. Jan Fitters follows participative management style for achieving the objectives of the company efficiently. This management style helps the manager in involving maximum number of employees in the work process. While dealing with many employees the manager often faces some ethical issues which are highlighted in this essay. He follows different ways for motivating his employees.
