Violent workplace behavior Affiliation: Discuss each of the following characteristics and relate them specifically to what a Chief Security Officer (CSO) should look for to identify the potential for violent workplace behavior1. Disgruntled over perceived injustices at workWhen an employee is disgruntled over what he or she perceives as injustices taking place in the work place, they tend to have negative attitude towards everything and everyone in the workplace (Fay, 2011). It is easy to identify people with negative attitude towards the workplace as they tend to always be complaining to everyone from their supervisors to their fellow employees and even some to the customers they are serving.

They are never satisfied with any changes taking place and especially when it does not concern them directly. 2. A loner who is socially isolatedAn individual who is a loner and socially isolated tends to always stay alone and avoids people. They do not entertain people be it colleagues or even customers and tend to be very silent at work. They also tend to have paranoia thinking that everyone in the workplace is an enemy and out to get them and hence the reason they avoid anyone. The CSO can pinpoint such people from their avoidance of everyone and isolating themselves at all time and preferring to work alone in assignments instead of in a team. 3. Poor self-esteemIt is not very easy to pinpoint an employee with poor self-esteem without being very observant or interacting directly with them.

The changes are not as physically expressed and pronounced as those of other violence-prone employees. In order to be aware of such individuals, the chief security officer needs to observe characteristics such as those employees who do not tolerate irritability; they are prone to cry over each and everything in the workplace and especially when they make mistakes in their assignments or are reprimanded. They are also prone to depression and are always very anxious over even minor issues (Fay, 2011). 4. AngryAngry employees are very easy to pinpoint as they cannot hide their anger.

The surest way for a chief security officer to pinpoint an employee with anger behavior is to look at the number of grievances being filed on a regular basis by each and every employee in the organization. An angry employee usually results to constantly filing of grievances in the workplace which makes them angry. If quick action is not taken, the employee is driven to violence by the anger.5. ThreateningThreatening employees always start with the feelings of superiority and everyone else being inferior.

They also consider themselves to always be on the rights side while all the others are wrong (Fay, 2011). These feelings drive them to threaten people who argue with their judgment or correct their perception of themselves and their work. The security officer should be keen on such individuals as any disagreement leads to threatening behavior and violence. 6. Interested in media coverage of violenceThere are those employees always striving for attention and being on the media coverage. It is easy for a security officer to pinpoint such individuals because they always have a tendency to blow small issues into huge crises which then calls for attention from the media personnel.

They strive to be on the limelight and hence will blow any situation over proportion to ensure they receive the limelight. Failure to which leads them to violence. ReferencesFay, J. J. (2011). Contemporary security management (3rd Ed.). Burlington, MA: Butterworth- Heinemann.
