SPORTS MANAGEMENT Introduction Management deals with the coordination of activities and individuals at a workplace or social organization. The significant aim of management includes the realization of set goals and objectives. It consists of four approaches (Leading, organizing, control and planning) that guarantee success of a business. Social organizations such as sports clubs incorporate these functions through their sports managers. Leading It is a function of management that deals with inspiring, encouraging employees through various communication methods (Bose, 2004). The managers act as leaders with roles of providing employees with rules and regulations that have to be followed. Employees should voluntarily follow the provided directions to guarantee a perfect relationship between them and their managers. Leading includes motivating the employees and assisting them to follow the set objectives for the firm (Daft, 2008). Managers should serve as leaders in an ideal situation and adopt perfect leadership skills (Daft and Marcic, 2013). Various employee cultures affect the leadership styles in an organization. Corporate structures also matter in coming up with leadership skills due to the relationship between the junior and senior staff (Sims and Quatro, 2005). Sports managers perform various leadership duties during the sporting activities. In professional teams, the managers act as leaders that motivate and inspire coaches and players (Watt, 2004). Since most sports managers work for colleges and other social institutions, there is the need for communication between the team. The managers execute leadership functions while conducting both interpersonal and group activities. Sports leaders have to connect socially with the players in order to provide motivation during matches and training sessions. Additionally, some sports clubs are enormous; hence require more attention from the managers. Leaders should first identify what motivates the players and employ the strategies to ensure maximum output from the players (Summers, 2012). Sports managers have to deal with various staff including coaches and trainers that are also issued with roles of passing information to the players. Control It guarantees the monitoring the performances of various individuals in the firm (Dyck and Neubert, 2010). The main aim of the controlling function is to ensure that the set aims and objectives are attained. The performance results are weighed against the goals after an evaluation of the firm (Koontz, Weihrich and Aryasri, 2004). Control also depends on the communication channels that assist in the comprehension of the objectives. Sports managers have various control roles in the games industry. Competition is the key factor in the sports field where individuals race to find the winners. The managers have to scrutinize the team members and come up with various positions depending on the contributions made by each player. The presence of many players calls for control to prevent cases of laziness. Teams have similar objectives that have to be achieved through equal contributions from the players. The manager has to control the players to ensure a similar objective leading to enhanced results. Performances have to be monitored to guarantee the teamwork. Achievement of goals causes the manager to come up with other objectives that will keep the team's performance rates high (Covey, 2013). Sports such as football require cooperation between the players and the manager's main duty be to ensure the group approach. Organizing It deals with the management of individuals and resources in the firm (Kerzner, 2013). Managers have to be aware of the number of employees and their allocated roles. An organized workplace makes it easy for managers to perform other management functions (Plunkett, 2013). Organizing also prevents firms from running on losses due to the monitoring of resources. Departmentalization of organizations plays a significant role in the organization process (Rice, 2010). Sports managers have to organize their teams to ensure all players have been catered for in the field. They should also manage the resources to prevent players from leaving the team for other well-paying groups. The resources should be distributed according to performances and ranks at the team. Games require organizing strategies to assist in competing with the rivals. For example, basketball managers have to organize their teams depending on the game and physical attributes. The managers have to delegate authority to his/her juniors; hence require an organized team to ensure perfection (Watt, 2004). The organizations structure of various teams also affects the performance. Organized communication channels assist in the relay of information from the manager through the trainers to the players. The sports managers have to take care of the player's mental and physical health; hence an organized player team will have the added advantage. Managers that organize their teams have frameworks that facilitate rational decision-making processes between the sports departments (Xu and Xu, 2011). Managers also have the role of analyzing different match timetables. Planning It includes the process of coming up with an action plan that depends on the aims and objectives of the organization (Fox, 2009). Planning incorporates other functions of management that ensure increased production. Most of the planning strategies depend on the mission and vision of the firm. Planning guarantees the execution of both theoretical and practical approaches that are significant to the business’ success. Sports managers have to possess action plans that will assist them in the competition with rivals. The plans depend on determinants such as player's physical ability, resources allocated, and objectives of the team. It ensures that the right amount of resources has been assigned to various departments in the sports sector. Planning is the foundation for other management roles. It should be employed by sports managers while hiring procedures whereby players have to be scrutinized for any foul plays. It also ensures that only the experienced players are hired; hence preventing future costs such as training and coaching expenditures. Planning also eradicates competition from rivals because the players are focused on attaining the objectives. For example, a sports manager in the football sector has the role of coming up with attack strategies in the field to ensure success. Lineups depend on the strength and experience of the rival team. Planning strategies vary from task to task whereby the managers have first to analyze the situation and come up with a suitable action plan. In the sport's field, success depends on the planning ability of the managers since the players have similar outputs. Finally, a sports manager may adopt planning to prevent players from lagging behind due to the performance contracts and monitoring (Eguavoen, 2011). Conclusion Sports organizations have similar foundations and objectives to workplaces. Management assists in the operation of human, technological, and financial resources in an organization with the aim of victory.
