A forced purchase tie in agreements, deviation from the organization’s code of ethics, selfish interest in using Ramona’s religious background and advertising techniques inform your position that Ramona should not sign the contract. I agree with you, but these facts but ethical, legal, and spiritual bases support a contrary argument.
The Bible commands Christians to be salt and light to the world and notes that light is put on a stand, not hidden. Ramona should therefore join Next Step, apply her spiritual conscience in changing the organization, and members of the organization will see the light, assume the same consciousness, and transform the company (Kohlenberger, 2004). Your moral argument is also restrictive because according to utilitarian ethics, acts that offer greater benefits to a majority of members of the society are considered moral (Brooks & Dunn, 2009). In addition, a decision that leads to harm, such as the property ownership initiative that eventually fueled the 2008 financial crisis, but had a good motive, should not be used to judge the proprietor as immoral (Bazerman & Tenbrunsel, 2011). Further, the identified harm among distributers only occurs during hard economic times and could be resulting from other factors than the tie agreement. This identifies greater benefits, because other stakeholders such as employees and consumers enjoy benefits. The company also relies on lawyers in developing its policies and solving its emerging problems, an initiative that implies legality of decisions and actions of the company (Miller & Jentz, 2009). The spiritual, moral, and legal considerations therefore suggest that Ramona should sign the contract.
