In 2008, I joined Ernst and Young as an auditor. During my stay, I was given the task to audit brokerage, which was previously performed by me as an intern in one of the other firms. Therefore, it was not a new job for me and I was quite confident and expert in the audit process. During my analysis of brokerage firm, a number of discrepancies related to bank transactions were found, such as huge deposits in different bank accounts, as well as, various transactions before the cut-off date. As I was a junior, I informed the manager regarding the found discrepancies; however, the manager did not agree with me and considered such transactions as usual business transactions.

However, I was confident in my study, and thus, I continued to investigate further in transactions without being impolite with my seniors, in order to maintain the integrity of the organization. Moreover, I acquired the support of one of my friends by obtaining his advice indirectly without breaking the policies of the organization. It would be an unethical and unprofessional act if I would have shared the confidential information with my friend. In this regard, I carried out comprehensive research and observed that it had something to do with the Amman Stock Exchange authority.

Subsequently, I discussed the different aspects of ASEA with my friend, and he informed me that good cash position, high liquidity ratio, and strong bank balance were some of the factors that were considered by the Amman Stock Exchange authority at the end of every year, which supported my suspicion regarding manipulation of business accounts for the abovementioned purpose. At this time, I once again informed my seniors with detailed reports and analysis that were pointing towards the fraud company.

This time, a raid was carried out on the brokerage firm by the fraud examiners of our organization, which investigated and referred the company as a fraud. Finally, despite earlier disagreement, my manager, as well as, the senior staff congratulated me on my efforts and confidence, and a thanks letter appreciated my endeavours. In this regard, it is likely that employees’ thinking may differ with their managers and seniors; however, an individual should remain confident in his findings and make efforts to prove as eligible for appreciation.

The difference in thinking approaches should not become a weakness in an organization or institution, but this diversity should be taken as a strength, which may bring success and harmony around the globe.
