Going into 1998, the company has 12 retail stores in Tokyo, 7 in Hawaii and 1 in the Philippines. (Forbes, 2005)By 1997, there were an estimated 8,000 specialty coffee outlets in the US. Starbucks ' competition has scaled up its expansion plans in order to remain competitive in the market. Starbuck's closest competitor at that time was Gloria Jeans, another franchisor of specialty coffees. There were at least 20 small local and regional chains that aspired to compete with Starbucks. (The Gale Group, 2007)As of December 2009, the total number of stores of Starbucks had reached 16,706 sites with 8,850 stores operated by the company and 7,856 licensed stores.

Starbucks Coffee has served in more than 50 countries today. It is considered as the largest coffeehouse company in the world and the number one specialty coffee retailer. (Starbucks Corporation, 2009)Strategic Map of Specialty Coffee Industry.
