Leadership Skills Leadership Skills List and define five (5) potential benefits of delegation There are several benefits of delegation of work out of which the top five of them includes effective and efficient utilization of time. When a manager delegates some of his/her work to his/her subordinates, he/she gets time for focusing on other work and when work is divided among more than one individual, more work can be done within a specific period of time (Walker, 2010, p.427). 2. Another major benefit of delegation is that it helps employees in showing their talents.

When employees are provided with responsibility along with authority, they tend to work on assignment on their own and they tend to be creative in performing their tasks. This helps them in showing their potential to their benefits as well as organization. 3. Another major advantage of delegation is that it can be used as a tool of motivation. When managers delegate work to subordinates, subordinates feel that they are trusted by their managers and thus feel that they are important to the organization.

This elevates their morale and they become motivated to work harder and perform better. 4. Delegation even elevates the amount of accountability of the subordinates which helps the manager in differentiating those employees who are working hard from those who are just being free riders. 5. Delegation even enhances the quality of work that is being performed. When managers have too many tasks at their hands, they try to complete all of them in a limited amount of time period and they try to accomplish tasks with satisfactory level of quality.

When they delegate tasks, they have less work to perform and they can even pay special attention to quality while performing tasks. List and describe the seven (7) guidelines for good delegation. 1. In order to ensure that optimum level of delegation is achieved, managers need to first understand the importance of delegation and delegate work on daily basis and if they have not started delegating tasks they need to do so instantly. 2. Managers cannot delegate all their tasks; they need to be very careful in delegating tasks.

Those tasks that are of utmost importance should be managed by the manager himself. 3. Managers need to ensure that the subordinate to whom the work is being delegated as the knowledge, skills and abilities to carry out those tasks. 4. While delegation, managers need to ensure that the task has been completely understood by the subordinate and the method needed to complete the task is well known to him/her. 5. Managers should not only delegate tasks, they should even delegate authority needed to complete those tasks as this authority will ensure that the subordinate has access to required resources that will help him in carrying out the responsibility (Skinner, 1992, p.216). 6.

Managers even need to ensure that the resources that are needed to complete a task are provided to the subordinate in order to ensure that the task is completely in an effective and timely manner. 7. Lastly, managers should carry out a follow-up to check how well the task is being carried out and should make amendments while the task is being carried out. Discuss why one of the major complaints of subordinates regarding delegation is the issue of dumping. Offer an example of a personal experience or observation of dumping taking place.

A major issue related to delegation according to the subordinates or the delegates is that as soon as a delegated task is accomplished by the delegate, the manager or the delegator does not obtains feedback regarding how smoothly the subordinates completed the task. Due to this, those subordinates who are indulged in the completion of the task feel that the assignment was dumped on them (Temple, 2012, p.16). This means that the subordinates feel that the manager did not find the task of great importance and just dumped the task on the subordinates as the task was unpleasant for him.

While delegation managers tend to delegate those tasks that can be performed by a subordinate who has less skills as compared to the manager. In order to avoid making the employees perceive that a task was dumped on them; managers need to attain feedback to make the employees feel that the task completed by them was of great importance. Example: While working on a team assignment in my educational institute, the leader gave me the responsibility of completing the written part of the assignment which was the business proposal for the business that we were supposed to present to out institute.

After completing of the task, I handed over the report to the team leader. The leader went through the report and kept it on one side. He did not even care to ask me about the issues I faced in completing the task and did not even comment about how well the task was completed. I felt as if I was doing some work that was not important and any individual within the team could perform the task and higher amount of effort was not required. References Skinner, R. D.
