Armstrong (2006) argues that keeping the safety of the employees and ensuring their health is both the moral and the legal obligation that falls on the shoulder of the management. However, for the safety and health programmes of organisations to be fully effective and responsive, the participation of all the members of the firm is necessary (Armstrong 2006).

This supposition is supported by laws, e.g. Health and Safety At work Act of 1974 and the Code of Practise, mandating the safety of the employees at work and securing their health. . All of these events translate to lose estimated to be around €13.4 billion for 2010/2011 (http://www.hse.gov.uk/statistics/). In this context, it becomes essential to understand the connection between health and safety of employees and their job performance; since, there is a divergence between what laws and codes say pertaining to health and safety of employees vis-a-vis what is happening at the workplace (Caicedo, Martensson, and Roslender 2010).

Responding to this call, the research will delve into the concern pertinent to the connection and impact of employee health and safety at work on employee performance. This study is significant as it responds to the call of further studies in employees’ health and safety. Since employees’ health and safety are not given ample consideration even if employees’ health and safety are key in employee development when compared with other topics and issues in human resources (Caicedo et al. 2010).

In addition, this study is significant as a better understanding of the concerns surrounding employee health and safety will help management in drawing up programs and policies contributing to employees’ well being, which in turn, establishes “superior value creation” (Caicedo et al. 2010, p. 441) for the company. Finally, this study is significant not because it is a timely issue, but also because it looks into ‘internal pollution’ in companies that may contribute to the overall wellbeing of employees (Eriksson 2012). 1.2.

Aims of the Research Considering the moral and legal obligation of the management in ensuring the employees’ health and safety at work (Armstrong 2006), These are Nando’s Restaurant and Pizza Express. A comparative evaluation of their respective approach to the issue of employee health and safety vis-a-vis employee performance will be undertaken. The selection of the industry and firm to be evaluated rests on the supposition that the hazards and risks in the foodservice industry affect not only the employees but also concerns other stakeholders and the impact of the company’s actions on the issue of employee health and safety and employee performance directly influences other stakeholders of the companies.
