Organizing paper Introduction Organizing is a function of management that deals with bringing together the physical assets, the financial resources, the human resources, technology and knowledge in order to establish productive relationships that ensure attainment of the organizational objectives (Williams 6). The management should provide all resources including the raw materials, tools and capital resources required for the organization to function. Some tasks that are accomplished in the organization function include division of work, assignment of authority and responsibility and also allocation of the capital and technology resources (Williams 6). One of the organizations that have effectively accomplished the organization function is Dell Inc. The management has efficiently and effectively organized the physical assets, the human talent, knowledge, technology and financial resources in order to ensure competitive advantage in the market. The company is headquartered in Texas, United States but has operations across the globe. Dell Inc has utilized the industry’s most efficient organization model. Some core organization elements include just-in-time inventory management, employee training, delegated authority and efficient allocation of capital resources (Williams 7). Physical assets In 2000, Dell established computer assembly factories in Austin, Lebanon, Tennessee, Ireland, China and Malaysia. The company also acquired assembly factories in Brazil in order to extend the manufacturing of the computer products (Holzner 19). In 1998, Dell added about 1,600,000 square feet of office space to the Round Rock complex thus increasing the demonstration center and visitor’s meeting rooms. Currently, Dell has full functional facilities in US and India that support all business functions such as manufacturing, research and development and customer service. Dell has enough assembly physical facilities in UK, China, India, Brazil, Poland, Malaysia, Philippines, Florida, North Carolina, Minnesota, Illinois, Tennessee, Oklahoma, and New Hampshire. From 2002, Dell launched kiosk locations in various shopping malls in order to reach out to more potential customers. In 2005, the company expanded the kiosks to Australia, Canada, Hong Kong and Singapore (Williams 5). Dell has ensured efficient utilization of all production facilities and production space in its operations. The company leases out excess space in order to ensure maximum utilization of the physical assets. The company is geared at replacing the outdated physical assets such as machinery (Holzner 60). Human resources Dell Inc has more than 109,400 employees spread in more than 30 countries in the globe. The employees are expected to serve customers in more than 170 countries. Dell has attained a leadership position as the preferred provider of computer and networking systems due to his talented workforce and excellent customer service. The Chief executive officer and chairman is Michael Dell who has been in the company since 1984. Dell board of directors consists of nine members and the Global Executive management committee is tasked with managing the daily operations and providing strategic direction to the company. Dell Inc has established efficient channels of communication within the organization. The company has effectively delegated authority and responsibility to teams and managing directors who are responsible for different market segments (Williams 6). Dell Company conducts a job analysis that identifies various roles in the organization, the duties performed in the position and skills required. The company through its human resource planning has been able to forecast the skills demand in the organization. Due to its reputation of excellent human resources policies, the company attracts and retained qualified professionals in all functional departments. The company offers sufficient training to its employees in order to enhance the productivity and creativity of employees. Dell employee reward policies contain both monetary and non-monetary rewards such as recognition for the excellent work performance and innovativeness. The company has implemented a flat organizational structure in order to allow for faster decision making by the functional teams. The company has created functional departments like manufacturing department, marketing, finance and logistics department (Williams 7). Knowledge Dell is committed to developing new knowledge in computer manufacturing technologies. Dell has approximately 2,000 engineers in the world committed to developing products that meet customer expectations. Dell was the first computer manufacturer company to put lithium ion batteries with a 5.5 to 6 hour life in its laptop models. Dell has consistently invested in people as the most valuable asset in order to drive innovation and knowledge creation. Dell has developed new ways to manage market and organizational changes thus attaining competitive strength (Holzner 20). Dell services help customers to manage and share knowledge globally by reducing the administrative costs and creating secure knowledge transmission channels. Dell collaborates with the internal teams, external partners and customers in designing communication protocols. The company has been able to sustain the culture of innovativeness in new knowledge creation and dissemination. The portal design and development methodology of Dell ensures that each client has a single access point to the knowledge base. The company has introduced videoconferencing solutions and created virtual projects teams that share new knowledge since a majority of the members are located in different parts of the world (Holzner 23). Technology Dell implemented cell manufacturing technology in 1997 where a team of experts would assemble the entire PC according to the client specifications. This move reduced the assembly time by more than 75 percent and increased the productivity per square foot of the assembly space by more than 50 percent. In 2008, Dell finally switched the power source of its Round Rock Headquarters to more environmentally-friendly source from TXU Energy wind farms and Austin Community landfill gas energy. Dell ProSupport technology enables customers to get telephone and online support on troubleshooting the Dell computer hardware (Holzner 45). Conclusion Dell Inc has ensured efficiency and effectiveness in its operations. The company culture is based on innovation and efficiency utilization of resources. The company has organized its employees in to effective innovative team. The company has ensured effective communication channels and an organizational structure that supports faster decision making. Dell is also committed to proper utilization of the physical assets such the production plants, assembly sites and machinery. The company has also ensured efficient knowledge management, organization and dissemination through working with strategic partners. The company has ensured efficiency in technology through switching to environmental-friendly energy sources like wind power and gas energy. The company has clearly delegated the authority and responsibility to line managers who are responsible for the profitability of their business units. The company has organized the knowledge through creating enthusiasm among the employees in research and development activities.
