As futuristic as the film is, automation of industries is the major cause of unemployment in modern times. The city, where Trump lived, was driven by disquieting rates of unemployment, poverty, strikes and strikebreakers, economic inequalities, political intolerance, and the domination of factory automation. The era was faced with an economic sprawl that resulted in high unemployment rates with deteriorating corporate profits. Due to such economic problems, automation sprung more to f save time and money to increase company profits (Chaplin, 1936).
Significance of the film to the course
Charles Chaplain’s move is one significant film for understanding macroeconomics. The movie shows America in its dire times in the aftermath of the economic depression. The decade-long economic depression deeply affected the American economy and the world at large. In macroeconomics, factors like unemployment and reduced factors of production contribute to the economic state of the country. These and other elements of macroeconomics like surging corporate profits, inflation, crime, economic inequalities, and political intolerance are very evident in Charlie Chaplain’s comic film (Chaplin, 1936).
Significance of the film to my career
The film is a depiction of the modern time economy. For instance, there is a scene in the film that shows Tramp attempting to take a break in the course of work hours, in the washroom, only for his employer to appear from the washrooms and order him to abandon stalling and return to work. Modern viewers watching this scene of the film may reflect remorsefully on the daily reality of electronic surveillance and indignity treatment by employers in the workplace. It is helpful for my current and future work because I have to expect harshness and high expectation of productivity from employees (Chaplin, 1936).

Analysis of the major and minor ethical dilemmas found in the movie.
Charlie Chaplain’s comic film has a myriad of dilemmas. One dilemma that Trump faces is the continued work with machines. The machine and very quick and tiresome and Trump can consider quitting work, however, with the rate of unemployment that is a decision he avoids. The work eventually lands him in the hospital. Again, after leaving jail, Trump faces the dilemma of saving a little hungry girl who has stolen bread from the shop. He manages to persuade the police that he is the bread thief to go back to jail. However, he is later released when witnesses inform the police that he did not lift the bread. This shows that community support and hungry life of the city life in Trump’s city. In his attempt to get back to jail, he eats a large amount of food in the cafeteria without pay which eventually makes him go to jail as he wanted (Chaplin, 1936).
Resolution of Ethical Dilemma in the film
Charlie’s dilemma of continuing or dropping the tiresome work is resolved by his persistence to stay at work and continue as the machine operator. The decision to continue with the work however lands him in the hospital due to a nervous breakdown. Again, his decision to save a little girl from the police is countered by an honest witness who informs the police of his deception. However, he does not leave his attempt to go back to jail and eats in the cafeteria without pay (Chaplin, 1936).
How I would resolve the ethical dilemma
In the 1930s unemployment was a great deal. Deciding to quit employment would have been a very difficult decision. However, I would talk to the employer to provide favorable working conditions and allocate more than one person for my job due to its demands. The decision to save a little girl, and go back to jail; was not a good decision. I would have talked to the police about the economic situation and the hunger of the girl. I would not have looked to get back to jail due to hard economic situations but would have continued with the hustle and bustle of job search. Read More
