There is no sorrow in the Dickinson poem and no relative sense of loss as is immediately experienced in the Updike work. In the end, readers should employ a different strategy to fully analyze a modern-day story. Brockmeier’s “The Ceiling” provides an example of how a modern-day story is structured.
