Judith Ortiz Cofers Description of a Young Girls Challenges as Illustrated in Her Book, Volar - Essay Example

The hope for adulthood and falling apart from her family and parents are the issues the Cofer describes to be the most essential for the character (Kraver). She expects her arms and legs to grow, so while climbing upstairs, the girl is symbolically imagining her rising up as the personality that is full of emotional integrity, honesty, and moral values. The girl depicts her existence in poverty because her parents reside in a small flat with obsolete settings (Kraver describes). Of course, the young character has been dreaming of leaving all these settings behind when growing as a person.

Judith Ortiz Cofer’s description of a young girl’s challenges as illustrated in her book, Volar, is a rather optimistic and encouraging contribution to the smoothness of the interpretation of a girl’s worthiness on the path of self-actualization. Like other girls, her primary desire is to dream big and reach the most comfortable ways out of family poverty. The author of the story describes the diminished position of the parents of a young girl. They fear the landlord to whom they have to pay rent.

The landlord is depicted to wear symbolic golden clothing and accessories while calculating his “noble money” (Kraver). Possibly, the parents of the girl possess little chances to get good work because they belong to the lower class. Still, they have to cover their monthly bills to the landlord who excessively possesses the power over the family. Proud girls like she would like to assist the parents in resolving problems with the finances. That is why, following the attempt to do so, the girl plays a trick to the landlord trying to protect the role of her parents, saving them from harmful obligations to repay debts.

For such girls like her, the financial crisis is the situation of the overwhelming helplessness in which she should preserve patience and concordance with the order of life. The girl belongs to the family of the Spanish immigrants because, as the dialogues of the story show, they speak the Hispanic language (Kraver). Serving as an element of the immigrant community, she describes her desire to address the challenges which every foreign girl faces when relocating to an unknown country. In the USA, she is a victim of stereotypes of the “dream” of the fictional beauty.

When comparing herself with a blonde Barbie doll, she makes feel beautiful even failing to meet the standards. Despite all the irrationalities that life brings to her in full, the girl chooses the way to spy for the boys overcoming her growing desire to feel beautiful and honest with them. However, for her, it is a challenge to keep the image of a story superhero inside her, as she tries to preserve her gender identity, being truly subjected to the unexpected conditions and challenges of the immigrant community.

She tries to establish a positive and optimistic connection with the entire world, although it is difficult to stay deliberated from the stereotypical perception of reality. She comes to be strong, decisive, and responsible for the actions she makes to reach happiness and sense of the wholeness that encourage her to move forward with advanced solutions to change life for better.
