As he progressed to learn from the mistress, the master requested his wife to stop educating him. So, she obeyed his husband and changed into an inhuman woman that Douglass couldn't recognize any longer. He writes, "she finally became more violent in her opposition than her husband himself" (36). The point that the mistress changed into an insensitive being and things were no longer the same, it didn't break him from looking for a way to read and write. It only took him to another dimension that finally worked for his good.

Douglass hoodwinked a kid from the locality and made the kid train him to read and write. And as he hoped, things didn't go wrong. Things became again. He never gave up on finding any way that would enable him to learn more and improve his reading aptitudes. An Aspect That Spark Douglass Desire for Reading and Writing  In his quest to learn, Douglass found a book named The Columbian Orator. Each occasion paved a way to read the book and learn some new words.  Finally, he was able to learn the words, and things seemed to be on his side.

Later he went to a shipyard and saw a board with words. He tried copying the letters, and he was successful. However, that didn't make him feel that he has attained what he wanted. He kept his desire to learn and write. He later found a boy and requested him to show him how to write. Things were super because the boy trained him on how to write all the letters of the alphabet. In as much as it took him time, it didn't make him lose heart. It took courage and perseverance to work on his dream.

The last step was to duplicate all the words from the book and try to recall them. With practice, he was able to do excellently after a long duration. As a slave, he never had a chance to attend school, but he found avenues that enabled him to read and write like any other person with formal education.
