Even sadder was that she never tried to challenge the norm of the time even though she had the potential to. The green light represents the future and the struggle of people to achieve their goals by changing who they are. The problem, is that the past and present tend to draw them back into their past lives.

Which the characters in the story then use to try and help them create a better future for themselves. The green light is their desire to continue to keep their optism and the hope that they will never lose it when looking to their future, even if it becomes harder and harder to achieve their personal goals that would fulfill their great American dream.
