Classics Finding the perfect book for our children can be an overwhelming task. As a librarian, one is expected to give proper advice to someone searching for a new children’s book and also be able to connect the classic and the current books. Libraries and bookstores have an array of books that one can choose from and for one to select the perfect children’s book and it is very essential for a book to be entertaining and very easy for children to read and understand (Hearne 23). The books should also be able to encourage good morals in children. When one decides to focus on the award-winning books, it will help in narrowing down the options from a wide variety of books. Majority of classic books for children seem to be timeless such as Millions of Cats by Wanda Gag and Pat the Bunny by Dorothy Kunhardt. Some recent children’s books have also proved to be on a similar level as the classic books with time they will also be regarded as classic books. Children cannot be easily attracted by a book that has black and white illustration and also considering the age of the book, they may not know the existence of the book. The librarians need to make the book more familiar to both children and adults to get them to read it. Librarians should recommend the book to children who love picture books which involve animals. Thump, Quack, Moo: A Whacky Adventure is a picture publication authored by Doreen Cronin and illustrated by Betsy Lewin. Thump, Quack, Moo is a very fun story in which children are most likely to enjoy. The book has a few vocabularies that are quite challenging and for this reason, it is advisable to read the story aloud for children to listen to instead of independent reading. These are several guidelines given by librarians when choosing a children’s book. The book also employs repetition to some small extent. The repetition used is very important since it helps capturing the attention of children. Thump, Quack, Moo may be more appealing to kids as compared to Millions of Cats. This is because of the black and white illustrations used in the book which are not that appealing to children since they prefer colorful books. In Thump, Quack, Moo Lewin employs illustrations that are bold and comical making it more appealing.  Both books would be highly recommended by librarians for young readers. Thump, Quack, Moo incorporates challenging vocabulary. Students get to learn of new words which augment their curiosity, and teachers can explain new vocabulary to the children. The short sentences that are in large type make the book even better and easy to read for beginners. The book Millions of Cats uses rhythm and rhyme which capture the attention of kids and is very engaging. Pat the Bunny by Dorothy Kunhardt was published in 1940. Pat the Bunny is an interactive children’s book. The book is delighting to children because of its feel and touch concept. Although the book is not officially an award-winning children’s book, it is ranked sixth in the category of hardcover books for children that are best selling. The simple language together with large prints used in the book attracts children and gets them to be more interested in print as an allurement of action and even thought. These various aspects of the book have made it very popular till today. Every page of the book shows Judy or Paul, characters in the book, engaging in various activities. This includes: smelling of flowers, petting a bunny, and also playing peek-a-boo. This book involves the reader in all these activities by guiding them. The book accomplishes these by including scented papers (flowers), fuzzy fabric (which is the Bunny) and Paul hiding under scraps of cloth (peek-a-boo) on the books pages. Press here by Herve Tullet is a hardcover book published in 2011. It’s considered to be the most creative picture books of all times. The book has been a New York Times Bestseller, a Publishers Weekly Best Book of the year, a National Indie Bestseller, a Publishers Weekly Bestseller, an Ala Notable Children's Book Nominee and also a Kirkus Reviews Best Children's Book of the year. Tullet uses simple, colorful dots together with clear instructions making the book interactive and entertaining for the readers. The book also includes a few commentary such as READY and PRESS HERE AND TURN THE NEXT PAGE. Each and every book invites the person who is reading to press, shake, tilt, rub, or even blow on the page required (Tullet 2). The fact that the book Press Here rewards its readers when they follow instructions makes it more appealing for children. For example, when one blows on the page the dots fly away and rubbing the dots may cause it to change color. The books offer a chance for children to develop their motor and counting skills and also give children an opportunity to learn various colors. Children also get to learn to follow instructions since the book guides the reader to go left either or right, up or down. By following instructions, the reader determines what will be on the next page. Librarians also refer the book as an ipad. This is because the book is powered by imagination instead of electronics. All mentioned books would be recommended by librarians for young children who are still being taught on how to follow instructions. This is because both books have guidelines that the readers use making them interactive. To sum it up, various authors who are new have used classic children books as guidelines in writing their books. Quality children books are composed of memorable characters, a plot that is compelling, beautiful artwork, simple language and also for the book to be interactive (Hearne 37). Children books that have these qualities are bound to be timeless and will be enjoyed by children from various centuries. When one enjoys, a current book that uses the same techniques that were employed in a classical book they are also most likely to enjoy the classical book and librarians should take advantage of these so as to keep the readers reading.
