These companies, whom he refers to as the visionary companies have at their heart, a set of “core values and a sense of purpose” (P.39) It is these strong fundamentals, that inspire the workers to do more than just work and make money. It guides them through their as well as the company’s goals.
Secondly, the companies indoctrinate their core ideology and thirdly set about the task of identifying people who are in concord with these key ideologies and train them to take on key leadership positions. The last principle of their success is the policy of aligning the organization in view with its avowed core ideology. The visions and values of companies come to naught if they do not translate these into corresponding action and a comprehensive policy of alignment.
Jim Collins chose eighteen companies, delved into the length, breadth, and depth of them, analyzing and examining the reasons behind their success. All the companies on the list had to meet the following criteria: - it had to be world-famous, have a strong social image and be more than 50 years old. The companies which made it to the list were Boeing, Disney, Ford, IBM, Hewlett Packard, Motorola 3M, American Express, Citicorp, General Electric, Johnson & Johnson, Marriott, Merck, Nordstorm, Philip Morris, Procter & Gamble, Wal-Mart and Sony.
